How highly do you rate him at: Welter Head to head All time p4p. I have him at #29 all time p4p, do you think that's a little to high? Some notes from the IBHOF: "Among the great opponents he faced are world champions from seven different weight classes spanning 48lbs...he met 15 fellow world champions and five hall of famers...in 1925 he beat three world class fighers in a six month span...Villa...Fields...and Bud Taylor..." There was also the trilogy with Ross (must be underated as a series of fights, people rarely mention them), the pair with Canzoneri and getting out on top beating a great fighter in his last trip to the ring (Ambers). He lost, of course. But as IBHOF also mentions, "McLarnin consistently fought the best in the world for 13 years." Your thoughts?
Bert Sugar rates him No.21, 29 is certainly justifiable. He won 2/3rds of his fights against hall of famers, all 27 of those bouts, including wins against Leonard (past his best I know!), Canzoneri, Barney Ross, Ambers etc. You could maybe fault him for longevity or consistency, but the head-2-head ability and the big wins are there, I think he's a lock for top50 anyway.
Top 40 p4p for me no doubt he has some huge wins and his fights with Ross are legendary 29 seems far if I did a list I'm guessing he'd be around early 30's so 29 is cool. You could argue he is a top ten welterweight I have him at 12 or so but defiantly a legend and holds a win against Pancho Villa (I know this was Villa last fight but he was still only 24 and McLarin was still kinda green at the time).
