I'm sorry to bore everywhere one with another thread about you know who is just with all this recent talk about "TBE" has really made me sit down and think where he would sit on an Greatest of all time list. To be honest i'm not a great fan of these kind of lists as there they is always bias and its hard to be fair. I feel head to head I think mayweather gives any fighter in history real trouble between 130 - 140. In my opinion he's the best 130 pound fighter ever ahead of arguello, nelson and pacman. At 135 and 140 I feel he gives any of the top 10 from these weight trouble that includes the likes of Duran, Benny leonard, armstrong, whitaker, pryor, chavez real problems. In fact I feel his style is so awkward you'd have to favour him over the likes of Chavez. His 147 resume is a little meh but in fairness thats more to do with the opposition or should li say lack of top opposition he's had available to him plus injuries to the hands have prevented him from really dominating and Knocking out much lesser fighters. From a business perspective you have to admire his acumen as he has picked some opponents at the right time. However people seem to forget other great fighters i.e Ray Leonard operating in a similar fashion. All in all i do not think he is "TBE" far from it but anywhere between 15-25 of all time is a fair ranking and quite an achievement in terms of business success considering he has hardly showcased what some may call a fan friendly style in his later PPV fights. Thoughts?
I think that's fair I have him a top 20 ATG right now if he finishes 50-0 then top 15. Undefeated in 3 different decades through 5 different weight classes 38 and still on top of the sport.
He falls exactly in the spot that I rate him all-time. No higher, no lower. Anyone who disagrees with exactly where I rank Floyd Mayweather all-time knows absolutely nothing about boxing. I will not reveal where I rank him.
I detect a hint of dissent in your eye rolling emoticon. Careful, you are teetering on the precipice of acknowledging you know nothing about boxing.
A great fighter in a weak era. It cannot be argued that his greatest wins would have been average title defenses in the 70's and 80's. I mean come on Manny vs Floyd for the 147 linear title when both are really natural 126 / 130 fighters should tell you everything you need to know. Floyd is possibly the best ever 130 fighter and I say possibly , but he doesn't beat any other greats above this weight. 135 - Duran hammers him. 140 - Gets dominated by the Hawk. 147 - Please , just don't get me started. 154 - Ok go and fight Tommy.
I love Duran but what makes you think he Hammers him at 135? I mean do you think he'd stop him? I've seen nothing from Floyd which would leave me to believe he would get hammered. Over 15 rounds I'd favour duran and I think he's hurt him on more than a few occasions but Mays chin is solid and i feel he counter back and then move. Duran would chase plenty of shadows early on. Over 12 rounds I'd favour duran just maybe 7 -5 providing the "best Duran showed up". I don't think its lopsided though. Far from it.
As always, the perspective that comes with time will be needed for an accurate judgement. If I had to say right now, off the top of my head I'd say around 20-ish? Not top 10 by any means but I think he'll be top 25 in a lot of lists in a few years time.
I think old school guys like Sandy Saddler, and Henry Armstrong would have worked Mayweather. Mayweather couldn't keep Castlillo off of him, how is he going to deal with guys like Saddler, Armstrong, Duran etc. at those lighter weights?
