So what? JLC was shot and was a career featherweight. Nothing to brag about there. Yeah he won belts so what. So do plenty of other fighters. Why don't you remind the board who he won the belts against? While you at it why don't you defend his two devastating losses at the hands of Pac and May. The gulf in class was as wide as the grand canyon. "World class" fighters don't walk into fights where the difference in talent is a chasm. That's why it's called world class.
I aint biased mate i know he had his limitations. Im not saying he was an elite fighter but he pushed the top 10 p4p in his heyday, not bad is it ? Why would he sell tickets if he was no good ? The people of manchester were watching in in their thousands long before he was a world champion because we knew he was good, and we were proved right by his career, which was GOOD. Notice im not saying great there. I know my username is crap by the way, i was drunk, first thing that came into my head.
The guy was making HALF a MILLION at the M.E.N arena defending the WBU title, an organisation that was run out of a cottage in Norwich under the auspices of World Title boxing. You have to call that **** for what it is. He was popular. No doubting that and Wa.rren knew it. Even Calzaghe complained bitterly when under SN about the money Hatton was making beating up road sweepers. If Hatton was so good he wouldn't have turned down MANDATORY shots at the WBO WBA and EBU. The guy got to pick and choose who he fought and when because he was a huge draw.
Belts won included against Kostya Tszyu and Luis Collazo. Hardly walks in the park are they ? ( waiting for Tszyu was shot bollocks, watch the fight )

@Hattons Hook, what I'm about to say is in no way a slight on your country so please don't take it that way. You asked why would he sell tickets if he was no good? He was the best you guys (English) had at the time. And you guys have a deep national pride, and rightfully so, so when your best boxer fights, you support him. But just because he is YOUR top man, doesn't make the worlds top man. Like I said earlier, if your starving, even a c racker taste good. What upsets me more, is that after he gets beat by Pac, he jumps on the PED band wagon. Pac landed a perfectly place punched on his chin. That punch would have dropped any light welter, PED's or no PED's. Excuses like that after a loss shows me lack of character.
We didn't even know if he was the best in Britain. When he and Witter were both rising stars ( Witter went on to win all the domestic titles and become a world champ likewise Hatton became a world champ) under SN Hatton reneged on an agreement to fight him in what would have been our biggest domestic clash since Benn Eubank. Hatton had ZERO interest in the fight and both he and Wa.rren knew it was a dangerous fight. Despite the publicity around the fight and the promises he made on camera he dodged Witter for a a decade. Hatton was a classic right time right place guy that capitalised on his unprecedented success to his fullest. Problem is even he started to believe his own hype.
No offence taken mate. I honestly only vaguely recall hatton saying about peds and yes indeed was sour grapes.
Career featherweight? The guy never won more than amexican title at feather and ssuper feather. He made his name as a lightweight. A really big, really strong lightweight. Of course he was world class. He was the man at light welter. How can you not be world class and be number 1 in a division
I didn't know this about him. Admittedly I didn't know much about Hatton until he had his fight with Luis Collazo here in the states.
Prior to fighting Hatton Luis was a nobody. He had beaten no one of no note. He was a capable fighter who had found his level. Hatton chose the easiest titlest at 47 and was taken to the brink in what some considered a debatable decision. We got to see what Luis was really about when an Old Sugar Shane handed him his as a few fights later.
Technical Ability - 3 - **** poor, came in with low hands, absolutely no no, wide punching showing bad form Defence - 4 - **** defence but his offence was his defence as was his in and out movement Offence - 8 - pretty good, good body attack, threw in combination Footwork - 8 - very good offensive footwork Accuracy - 7 - pretty decent Power - 6 to the head but 8 to the body Speed - 7 handspeed 8 footspeed Versatility - 4 he could box in and out but he's basically a pressure fighter Stamina - 10 in his prime, very good Heart - 9 - very good Chin - 8 - he took Tyszu's best, but could be rocked Physical Attributes - 8-9 - very strong, very conditioned Overall - 7.5 - yea I'd go with that
He wasn't a big strong lightweight. He was a guy that towards the back end of his career was repeatedly overweight and out of shape. And he only became a name when he upset Stevie Johnston. After that he went onto loose decisions to Floyd and the epic Corrales slugfest. By the time Hatton got to him he was shot. This was COMMON knowledge. But then again Hatton made a career of beating up shot "name" fighters. Pendleton, Oliveria, Vince Phillips and Kostya. Kostya didn't even want to fight Hatton. He was going to retire after the Sharmba Mitchell demolition and only wanted the rising Vivian Harris at that time. The only reason why the fight was made was because it was a career pay day for him.
