Saw him the other day at lightweight against Golden Johnson. He got hit more than he should have. I guess with his unbreakable chin he could take more risks than you'd expect. Besides that, power and his fast hands were his best assets. The guy didn't have great boxing ability, but he was able to compete with the best boxers of his generation above his prime weight, which tells you how difficult his combination of power, speed and a great chin were to deal with. It also allowed him to knockout JMW's, even as more of a one-punch-at-a-time plodding puncher, which is what he became at that weight.
He was a steroid user but to call him overrated is a bit harsh. One of the best lightweights and jumped straight to welter and also beat good 154 fighters however the margo fight appears to of become less significant after the wraps issue.
People forget his great achievements and underrate his boxing ability. It's not inconceivable to think he could outspeed and outsize Chavez in a war. I wouldn't favor him to win, but the point stands; people paint Mosley as a "Black Mexican" (which makes no sense) and continuously **** on his ability to box based on his two stylistic foils at the elite level and his past-prime performances. That's what I mean when I say fans are fickle and underrate his prime. I'd say his footwork is fairly impressive; always in balance, able to change the angle laterally, very good at measuring and getting the right range on his punches...
He has a genuine atg power:chin ratio. His devastating ko of marg is testament to that imo. His roids detract from the oscar rematch but noone thinks he won that anyways do they? Knocking out holiday, marg and vargas though, that's 3 stoppages at the highest level. Took clean punches from oscar, forrest, winky, floyd, pac, cotto, marg, mayorga, vargas and has never been stopped. Sensational chin. His jab is terrible though and his footwork isn't too clever. He can't box but he can brawl with the best of them. Quite an underrated fighter I think.
Great fighter in his prime (at 135) and still put in some fantastic performances up in the higher weights.
the three guys that had extreme talent that allowed them to do things in an unorthodox fashion in the past decade of boxing in the following order 1. floyd mayweather - master boxer with supreme ring IQ which puts him above the rest 2. roy junes junior - i don't remember if he ever threw a jab. probably had more raw athleticism than floyd and can lead with hooks, upper cuts and rights. Got hit a lot less than shane mosley but was not quite the boxer floyd was....... 3.) shane mosley - not quite the offensive machine that roy jones was, and was probably more offensively orientated than floyd, but his exteme ruggedness and good chin, physically ability made up for his lack of defense and ring IQ.
may not be the best to look at but its effective in what he wants to do, he can close a fighter down when he needs and circle and create angles (vs DLH) when he needs to, also able to switch stances and mantains his balance
