I know Pryor wanted this fight to happen but after the duk koo kim tragedy mancini was never the same guy and lost the title to livingstone bramble shortly after. Had things been different though? Who takes this non-stop toe to toe war:?
Looking back I am not sure there was a worse opponent for Mancini than Pryor. Pryor was faster, higher in weight and Mancini was not proven at 140. If Mancini could have held 140 okwell, then it would have been an exciting fight which Pryor would have won in about round 8 or 9 with speed and hitting Ray at will.
Pryor was a freak, like his idol and friend Armstrong, and Mancini's body punching could only take him so far against an opponent like the Hawk. Aaron could not only swarm, but fly around the ring, swooping in and out from the perimeter. The Hawk is a fairly common moniker in boxing, but nobody actually epitomized that bird of prey in competition quite like Pryor did. Take a look at their performances against Arguello. Best for best, Pryor-Mancini would have been entertaining for as long as it lasted, but I know who I would have had my money on. Mancini and Pryor provided guest commentary for one of the bouts between Bruce Curry and Leroy Haley (I think the first one, Bruce's stunningly unexpected title winning effort), and tried to talk up a prospective match between themselves, but the attempt sort of fell flat, and they focused more on their praise of Bruce Curry, who both seemed to regard highly and appeared to be rooting for. Ray and Aaron were also very flattering to each other, not at all acrimonious. Apparently, there was more heat between Boom Boom and fellow Youngstown star Harry Arroyo, and appeared to be more interest in that prospect after Harry snagged the IBF LW Title.
it is funny, sometimes those fights where they have respect turn out to be the most heated as though they were holding back and built up animosity. The Arroyo/Mancini fight would have been interesting. Harry was taller and I think could have given Mancini a very good fight, maybe even beat him-especially the Ray who fought Bramble in 1984.
Mancini is winning comfortably....building a bigger lead as the fight progresses into the deep waters...the fight is about to end, and Ray is getting more and more eager to be pronounced the sure winner...then his alarm clock sounds...Ray wonders where he is...slowly the previous nights events come back to him....he and Pryor punching the hell out of each other...Ray's recollections get only as far as round 8.
actually i heard their fight was gonna be made, but those plans fell apart when Mancini lost to Bramble... I read an interview where AAron said that he cried when Mancini lost,as there went a huge fight and big payday. That being said Pryor would have been too much of everything.. THe Hawk would have been all wrong for Mancini.. Although Mancini would make it competetive at times and there would be fireworks., once Pryor got in his Spazz mode he would put a hurtin on Boom Boom like no one else has.... Mancini would be in it for about 3 rounds.. Then Pryors speed ,bigger punch and better chin would just prove to be too much. The more Mancinni hit him the the worst it would get for Boom Boom... Pryor would drop him a few times between the 3rd and the 5th and hurt him repeatedly..... Pryor wins by violent ko or ref saves Mancini.. Pryor Ko 6.
wasn't poor Raqy involved in once death in the ring? This one would be his own.:ko:ko:ko:ko:boxx:boxxhe would be a punching bag.:thumbsup
I think this one looks similar to another Mancini bout: Chacon. Except this time it's Boom Boom moving up in weight to take on the tough guy. and having about the same amount of success as Bobby had and taking a bad licking in there from the opening bell. I sure don't see Mancini's skin holding up whatsoever to the volume of punches & accuracy Pryor had. 5 rounds tops.
Yep. What made that loss even worse for Pryor is that Johnny Bumphus (another prospective big money opponent) had just been upset on that same card. Pryor was in the audience that night, and basically watched his big money future go down the drain.
Mancini talked about this fight and wanting this fight on Ringside. Said he thought he had the style to deal well with a guy like Pyror. To get under his punches and be effective being the short guy on the inside. He thought he could've beaten him.
