I wonder if he'd have said Mayweather had Floyd's son become a shoe salesman or something?

I did wonder about that, Benitiz qualifies for everything apart from best defence.

It was a close fight and they father and son are actually very similar, Sr would get shot in his leg shortly after this. As you can see Floyd Sr outboxes Ray early

Probably an underrated win, Mayweather didn't achieve much but he obviously has allot of ability, although I'd pick Benitez myself

this is NO surprise, just because stats & titles tell us one thing, fighters will more often than not tell you different.

Real TOP fighters are worthy foes, even those time or circumsatnces may have overlooked!!!

Leonard was clearly in second gear for most of that fight and blasted Mayweather out when he decided to turn it up, clear class gulf. Although I know all we really care about is IMAGINE WHAT JR WOULD DO TO HIM

Disagree he was in second gear, imo he was being picked off at time. I'm not using this as an agenda to pick Jr over Leonard, Leonard wins that for sure, Sr probably has the better jab over Jr

I think that the assessments are very true...one of the best tactical fights I have seen was Leonard vs Benitez, Leonard had the edge in the power department but both were evenly matched...Benitez was a young master...Hearns was a truly talented guy and ATG, welterweight was his best weight for ATG....Duran was an animal and although the greatest at 135 was still formidable in the fight 1 vs Leonard but could not get back into that form for fight 2 on such as quick notice and heavy party schedule between but credit to Angelo Dundee and the benefits of having him in your corner, he know this

sr. did have quick hands and a nice jab as a fighter, but to be honest i always thought his attempts at being slick and cute with slipping punches were quite amatuerish. He doesn't look like he had a feel for that sort of style.Almost certainly better as a trainer of it than a practitioner.

Besides personality,SR doesn't have anything over gorilla dog,tuh be honest.Slick African American and all that, but had the weakest looking offense and made the most silly of noises. His slapdown of Jose Baret was beyond hilarious.

Compounded by his exceptional reach .. all build the case for Leonard's exceptional talent ... that he was able to survive and defeat this Hearns and avoid his best shots ... Ray may say Duran hit him hardest but no one believes Duran hit harder than Hearns at 147 or 154 ... Tommy just could not hit Ray ... pretty amazing ..

I was surprised by that as well, especially given that he voted Benitez as "best boxer." To be fair though, Mayweather Sr. was a pretty good boxer/technician himself.

The closest Floyd sr ever got to Benitez in any respect technically was probably the first time he wiped his arse with a towel.
