I'm biased towards the weight jumpers. I'm surprised I have Marvin as high as I do looking back. It's all about challenging yourself. How many times do you have to fight guys you've already beaten like Monzon was doing? (Griffith, Benvenuti, Rodrigo, etc.)

Same could be said for Hopkins fighting Allen all those times, but at least he moved up and took chances later on. Just my 2 cents :hat

Fair enough, though I appreciate the traditional divisional dominance route about as much.

Hopkins did more and Hags beat the better fighters. They also never killed any wives :blurp

Yeah see, that's the thing and why I'm not really that interested in arguing it. Contenders are sort of contenders for the most part when there aren't a lot of true standouts. I think Monzon's CV edges it in terms of what they were and their standing, but Marvin caught more 'prime' versions of his, if that makes sense. They both fought a lot of guys who were better at lower weights, although proven (or would become so) at 160. Monzon beat 3 HOFers, but Valdez are probably his best win(s). I think Duran going the distance looks a tad bad on Marvin when nobody else from the era could, losing his crown to a natural welter who had fought once in the previous five years even more so. Robinson has a better and deeper resume than all three of them, but was 'less dominant' and didn't sustain a remotely comparable reign. Greb fought above the weight - almost a SMW - quite often... It's all pretty undefined and debatable.
