I know they at their best they fought at different weight classes. Sugar Ray started at 147, and Money is already some 3 weight classes removed from his original by the time he gets to 47. I was going to go by age but a 30 year old Leonard is the Leonard that fought Hagler, problem is he had already slowed down due to the drugs and his career. In contrast a 30 year old Mayweather is the Mayweather that fought De La Hoya. Who still has elite endurance, hand speed, and reflexes. So the only fair way to do this is to assume that somehow they could meet up at 147 while both maintaining their respective skillsets without decline. It's hard to do age because I believe even a 36 year old mayweather is better conditioned than a 30 year old Leonard. So at 147 Who Wins? What's your scorecard? What's The deciding factor in the fight? No bias. No hate. Just showcase your knowledge. Go.
If it's a boxing match Floyd wins for sure. If somehow Sugar Ray Leonard could turn it into a brawl and rough Floyd up then he wins. I think he has good enough power and chin to win on the inside. But if its boxing, Floyd is hard enough to hit and has good enough legs that I don't see anyone outpointing him.
I'll take the guy who started at 147 and finished at 168, over the guy who started at 130 and finished at 150. Just IMO.
True that!!!! On top of that, the way SRL fought his greatest fights were no where close to the way PBF has fought his., just IMO.....
SRL by UD the thing with Floyd is that he's yet to have faced a fighter with the speed and boxing ability as Leoanrd ..I also beleive he would break that defense of Floyd's ..Imo he's better offensive fighter ...Thus the reason for the UD ..
I see SRL like the Barry Bonds of boxing; I started watching the sport in the 70's and Leonard is the best I have ever seen. In his prime, like Barry, he was SO much better than everyone else, there was no comparison. On the other hand, I see FMJ like the Pete Rose of boxing, he wasn't nearly as good as Barry in his prime, but his longevity is his strength. May has a lot of skills, but the best thing about him is that he has been able, like Pete Rose, to keep it going for so long, Prime for prime, he wasn't SRL, and I think SRL would have stopped him. He was a natural middleweight who cut weight, had an incredible chin, one punch power, and was faster than FMJ. The thing about Leoneard is, but about the age of 27 he was already headed downhill. Floyd had a tough time with Castillo, who wasn't nearly as good as Duran, and struggled with an old De La Hoya, who wasn't Tommy Hearns. Leonard at 5-11 was just too big and strong for him, and SRL used to destroy guys who couldn't punch. Benitez had great defense, just as May did, and Leonard just kept throwing punches until he fell down. Result; Leonard TKO-10.
come on now, mayweather EASY. he is 1000000x what his pops was and non trained SR gave SRL all he could handle.... people need to get a grasp of reality. assuming its at 147
I'd have to favor Leonard. I was lucky enough to watch him in his prime vs Benitez,Hearns and Duran. He is the most complete fighter I have ever seen. He adapted to what was in front of him and found a way to win. I don't think FMJ would be able to out slick Leonard and would be on the receiving end of some hard shots and most likely be stopped. FMJ is excellent in all departments but in all honesty never tested himself against guys the caliber of Benitez or Hearns. A faded DLH and Mosley don't come close. Leonard was tested and stopped both Hearns and Benitez.
A motivated ray leonard is very hard to go against vs anybody really . He just had that extra thing of knowing when he need to up his level if he was down on thr cards its this that sets him and mayweather apart.
Leonard had just the same speed but real power with it. His offense would have really tested Floyd. Too bad Floyd can't find any good opponents to really test him. Canelo would have barely been a contender in Leonard's era.
H2H I say yes Leonard is big enough and has the right style to beat FMJ, but P4P Mayweather is starting to pull ahead in my opinion. FMJ is finally starting to warm up to me due to his apparent maturing as a human being. We'll see what he does over the next 2 years or so after he finally hangs them up, than we can start to reflect fairly on his career.
Ask the question when Mayweather calls it a day and you'll get a more accurate response. Often past fighters get the run of the green in fantasy match ups.
