[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7P3xZGB350&feature=related[/ame] Thoughts? Just rewatched the SRL vs Floyd Sr fight, and despite the once sided dominance and eventual tko, there were subtleties that hinted Jr possibly doing well in this matchup. Floyd's jab and defense gave Leonard problems, and forced Leonard to adapt a style he was not used to, most notably the significant decrease in flurries that Leonard usually does. Such a style could easily be reproduced by his son. Short term stamina was a major issue in this fight- an observable pattern almost every round had Mayweather fighting Leonard off for the first two minutes, and then clamming up for the final minute, in which he practically let Leonard connect with every power shot (also, the double guard reduced his visibility, unlike the philly that Jr typically employs). It should be safe to assume that Floyd Jr wouldn't have these stamina issues due to the way he trains, up to 15 min sparring rounds at times. Thirdly, another factor of note was that Floyd Sr has a good chin. Even after being KD'd quite a few times he was still able to fight, in fact toward the later rounds it appears as if the damage had not done any noticeable decrease in his sharpness. There has been discussion as to just how good is Floyd Jr's chin, as we are not normally given the opportunity to observe it due to his very good defense- well perhaps we can look to his father to get a rough estimate..? Last to note, the TKO was round 10. Would Jr take this to a decision? and how close would it be?:deal
If you pick anything other than a Leonard, your going to be called an idiot.. Nobody apparently gets close to Hagler, Hearns , Duran, or Leonard in there primes.. And don't even mention SRR.. He always wins hypothetical fights by KO..
Floyd never fought someone with the handspeed and power of Leonard. I am a Floyd fan and see him being overwhelmed in the first few rounds and stopped around the 6-8 round range.
Judah and Oscar are the fastest people Floyd fought and he had trouble with them and neither of them were on the level of a prime Leonard ..SRL by KO !! No question !!
I know, it's **** isn't it? Floyd Mayweather was at his best as a super-featherweight. Ray Leonard was at his best as a welterweight. Ray Leonard beat Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran and Wilfred Benitez at welterweight. Floyd Mayweather beat Juan Manuel Marquez, Ricky Hatton, Carlos Baldomir and Zab Judah at welterweight. It's just plain ****ing bias that people think Leonard beats Mayweather at welter. Disgraceful.
Oh, I'm not saying I think FMJ beats a bigger, and better WW in Leonard.. I'm just sick of these hypothetical matchups that seem to do nothing but an excuse to rip on current fighters.. I mean every threads the same... You don't think it gets ****ing old? Every fighter has weaknesses.. Leonard had a short prime, and wasn't very active. Hearns had a tendenct to gas out, and was a tad chinny. Hagler often wasn't agressive enough (Unless you've only seen Hagler in the Hearns fight, then hes a straight brawler) and too conservative, and Duran...well that dude could be flat out lazy in training..
You're trying to downplay one of the biggest eras in boxing by saying the fighters get over hyped?? All 4 kings were ultra talented.
No, I never said over hyped.. I said they weren't perfect.. That's what makes boxing great, if a fighter can find a way to capitalize on an opponents weaknesses and find a way to win.. All 4 were great, but beatable.
At 147, I think Leonard probably wins but it would be a great fight. Floyd would struggle more with a guy like Hearns imo.
Floyd would have given Leonard trouble but Leonard was bigger and superior. So he would have won. Leonard that is.
