Here is an interesting fight. Leonard quicker but doesn't have the reach on Mike. Leonard also proved his toughness as did Mike. Who would you pick at their very best?
Leonard was all wrong for McCallum. Obviously, McCallum would be competitive and win rounds, but I think Ray's handspeed and mobility keep him a step ahead all night, and he wins clearly on the cards.
I would pick The Body Snatcher to take a close decision...although since SRL never seemed to come up on the short end of close decisions he might get the nod. Good competitive fight either way
I'm an over the top SRL fan boy because I recognize that Duran-Leonard I was a very close fight? Interesting.
SRL above welterweight is overrated. This is a 50-50 fight, and that's acknowledging SRL's greatness.
I agree. He was rather robotic. Fought great on the inside if a guy was there in his range,, but if a guy moved like Kalambay, or was fast like Toney he would be outboxed.. Ray would outbox him.
SRL moved up and took the Jr. MW title from Ayub Kalule. The Associated Press reported that Kalule got to fight Leonard because WBC Super Welterweight Champion Maurice Hope "priced himself out of the match." (SRL then gave up the JMW title when he fought Hearns for the WW Title and won). Shame that SRL didn't get to spend some time at JrMW as a champion. Hearns was probably 30% better at that JrMW weight, so another rematch could happened there too. Knowing SRL, he would have made Hearns beat McCallum first before he would give Hearns a rematch. Assuming, McCallum wins the Hearns fight, SRL probably outboxes Mike over 15 rds, 8-6-1.
Mike is probably my favorite fighter, but I have a feeling that Ray's speed in combination with all the rest would be too much. He would have to show better stamina than he did for Kalule, but in top shape he should be able to pull it off.
