15 rounds at welterweight. Whitaker has the capability to possibly outpoint Leonard for stretches in the fight, with the right jab and movement...Will Leonard have to assume the role as the aggressor for the entire fight? Could he do it? Could Whitaker hold him off?

Hard fight, i'll pick Leonard because this is at 147, peak Leonard. Duran was able to avoid Leonard's bombs when 'in the pocket', so Pea may be able to aswell, but i think he will find fast that Leonard's assaults are of so high of a quality that he should try and do this on the outside. Leonard will box with him but again assume the aggressor role as Pea is making it difficult even for his footwork. Leonard will edge a decision in a very good fight imo.

Please folks, dont criticise my assessment, this is a hard one. Just MAN-UP and analyse it!!

Thanks, just a bit worried that guys were gunna come at me with 'Pea's got no chance'. I dont think there's too much of a difficulty picking the winner, just analysing the fight itself i find hard. Thought i'd give it a go though. Who do you have winning? Is a difficult one. Good thread.

I feel that it is a closer fight than people realize...Whitaker has a skillset to trouble anyone in the lightweight to welter range...Whitaker is an ATG.

SRL was at 147 what Whitaker was at 135-140. I would give the edge to the stronger guy here.

    Two ATG's.

    SRL by split decision.

I'd pick Leonard on points. I can't see Whitaker getting knocked out here considering he took the punches of Trinidad over 12 rounds. While Whitaker was a fine welterweight, he wasn't the same fighter as he was at lightweight. Leonard has the edge in speed and power.

    Could Pea hurt SRL?

SRL did well against lefties.... including his amateur / Olympic days.

My vote goes to Sugar Ray Leonard based on his edge in Speed, Movement & Power @ any weight class over Whitaker, including Pea's best "Lightweight". Whitaker would look very slow against a welter Leonard IMO. I see SRL bombing with Whitaker cause he defo will not be afraid of Pea's punch, I just can't see how I can give any edge to Pernel.

I wonder if it has ever been asked to Duva, about the sparring sessions between Meldrick Taylor & Pernel Whitaker if any? Who got the best of the other?
that might be a pretty good gauge at a SSL Vs. PW.
(Tho Leonard @ Welter was a much harder puncher than Taylor)

I go with Ray, mainly because the weight gain would work against Pea. Still a great "chess game", so to speak.

Leonard would win at WW against the smaller Pea, who's best weight was at 135. I'd pick Leonard over pretty much every WW on his best night to be honest. I think a fight between Robinson and himself is a very close call.
