What did SRL and Dundee say before the Duran fight Stonehands?

They made it clear that Ray would not run, that Ray had every physical advantage.

Leonard told NY Magazine that “they all think I’m going to run. I’m not. I’m not changing my style at all… he’ll be beaten to the punch…those are the facts,” he continued, “What’s going to beat Roberto Duran is Sugar Ray Leonard.”

Duran, said Angelo, was a “heel-to-toe guy. He takes two steps to get to you. So the idea was not to give him those two steps, not to move too far away because the more distance you gave him, the more effective he was. What you can’t do in the face of Duran’s aggression was run from it, because then he picks up momentum. My guy wasn’t going to run from him.”

Soon after the fight (not 'later,' before he and Leonard had a chance to think about a legacy-enhancing statement) Dundee said “You’ve got to give credit to Duran, he makes you fight his fight.”

Leonard was asked why he fought Duran’s fight. His answer? “No alternative.”

Interesting stuff. It's quite possible Dundee and SRL were playing mind-games, or just saying the right things promotional. It's rare for a fighter or trainer to give out their gameplan/tactics/strategy unless there is a some kind of reason behind it. I think the last sentence is probably the most insightful and truthful in regards to the entire situation. It sums it all up well. Although I just realized you could interpret it in another way. No alternative as in they fight the best fight possible and there was no better fight to fight. Or you could interpret it the way I did initially, and I'm sure most do by thinking that SRL means Duran gave him no alternative because he made him fight his fight. Thanks for the statements and info. Good stuff.

based on what I saw in the Howard & Kalule fights, the Bonds fight, not to mention the shaky win over Geraldo, I feel strongly that Norris wouldve hurt Ray repeatedly. In fact, he did!

Ray doesnt do well when he is forced to become the agressor and chase down his prey

and to chase down Norris would be a very risky venture as he found out. When Norris dont want to be touched, he isnt. Terry is like Wilo the wisp, the Vision from the Avengers

Hell, Simon Brown found that out in the rematch and notice that it went that way becuz Norris MADE it that way. nothing Brown could do about it but comre forward and takes shots, just like Ray Leonard

Nobody knows how to cope with Terry's amazing skillz!

lets also not forget his lightning fast reflexes. Terry's are so quick the release is too fast for opponents to defend against whenever they stand in front of him. Like in the 3rd, Terry set him up so beautiful,, left right to the body made Ray focus on defnding his body while Terry followed up with a n uppercut right thru the guard

aint nothing he could do! Terry was so smart! how could ANYONE cope??

Not trying to rub it in becuz that's not my style but another difference between Terry & Ray is Ray can throw a lof of shots in a quick burst but his problem is that Terry dont stand still for him like Dave Green or Kalule or Lalonde.

how are you going to deliver a combination against a man that is neither here nor there?

the other problem for Ray is he takes too long looking for just the right opening while Terry cuts loose on a mother ****er's ass!

the opponent poses and Terry pitches!

anyways, that's my take on it. I think prime Hearns, 154 a ittle too awesome and wins it but not someone like Ray Leonard or Benitez. Terry will cave those fools heads in

seriously people, try throwing a combination at a guy when he is is way out of range. this is a problem even for world class fighters, that's why you never see it. You got to TRAP him along the ropes if you want to do it. but nobody and I mean NOBODY catches a young Terry Norris on the ropes except Julian Jackson (Terry was young then & not ready for prime time)

    anyone else tho, FORGET IT!

the problem is my man Terry KNOWS how to tie up his man like a expert!

I am sorry all you anti Norris fans but I dont see any way of outpointing the man

I read it. A little flat but an honest and interesting read. As for Norris, tough fight for him at any point in his career but prime for prime, I feel Leonard wins. Wouldn't be shocked if Norris won though. Kinda like Holmes-Ali

Terry Norris had a terrific night in February of 1991. Congrats to him on a great effort!

But there is no way in hell he beats any version of Leonard anytime anywhere. There would be a few times that he would get chin checked for certain. From the way his career carried out, he would have been stopped a few times. If Keith Mullings could do it, I have a hunch Ray Leonard might have been able to.

Call me crazy but I would pick Norris to beat the SRL of Febuary 1991.
