The man fought a lot of great fighters and his only stoppage loss was his comeback bout against Macho Camacho after a 6-year layoff. So, obviously, he had a pretty good chin. Of course he was a smart, quick fighter who didn't get tagged a whole lot but when he did eat a punch he handled it well. I rate it a 9 of 10.
Yep, in his welterweight prime it was a 9 out of 10. He was only visibly hurt once, against Duran in round 2 of their first fight. He took flush shots from Tommy Hearns. Great chin, great heart.
He fell down quite a bit (7 times) after his Welterweight days, but he still took punches from the likes of Duran 3 times, Hearns twice, Norris and Hagler plus Benitez who while not one of the best punchers ever (far from that) did have decent power too. So I'd rate it 8 and a half out of ten?
Totally agree, it's good enough to rate 9 for sure. Never ever cost him a fight at 147 and he fought some good ones. I'd add great survival instincts and anticipation as well......anticipation can help notably i think in taking punches.
I agree it was 9 out of 10 at welter but he never took full flush shots from Hearns in the first fight ... like a prime Jones Jr. he was too good to hit flush ... even in their rematch when he was dropped twice they were somewhere between grazing and semi flush but never what hit Duran or Cuevas , not even close ..
Great chin. Unlike Jones Jr, we saw definite proof of Ray’s prime chin before he began to decline. 9/10 sounds good.
I think it was a solid enough chin. It's not as if he kept on having to jump up in fights. Obviously as he aged his reflexes went slightly and he was getting caught more often. But as a young guy I'd say an 8.
The only time I can remember him getting stunned before his first retirement was in the second round of his first fight with Duran
Im wondering because he seemed to never get dropped until the 2nd part of his career but then got dropped alot. Interestingly not in the Hagler fight.
