Yeah, that was pretty confusing. Mancini is a guy with a heart of gold outside the ring, whereas DeJesus was a psychopath. Still doesn't change the fact that DeJesus was much better.
If you shoot a man dead in cold blood over a traffic argument, I think it's safe to say you're off in the head. But idk, maybe it was the drugs that set him off. He was high as a kite when he killed the kid.
He was really high after injecting himself with cocaine. ( no excuse in my book ) Then became a born again Christian but by then sharing needles caught up to him and he got aids. He admitted he was a life long drug user.
Mancini is the Volkswagon beetle, but De Jesus is the Mercedes in the fight. No matter what the scheduled distance by the 10th Mancini has been countered to shreds, and it is stopped in De Jesus' favour.
Dejesus by decision. If he was good enough to once beat Duran, and give him his toughest defenses, he can beat Mancini.
I've never been overly impressed with Esteban DeJesus. He was kind of like the "Ken Norton" to Duran's "Ali," except he wasn't as good as Norton, considering Norton arguably won all three fights. For some reason, he gave Duran trouble in their first fight. But you watch DeJesus against everyone else, and he doesn't look amazing at all. (Hell, against Duran in their second and third fights, DeJesus didn't look all that great getting stopped.) If Mancini could beat Jose Luis Ramirez and Bobby Chacon, and be ahead of Arguello after 10 rounds, he could beat DeJesus. Here's DeJesus winning his title. That guy isn't beating Mancini. Sorry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFpvvBOLq88
You chose a fight in which Dejesus win just about every round going away against a guy good enough to beat Ken Buchanan and Rodolfo Gonzalez.
Douglas beat Tyson, but he couldn't beat everyone Tyson beat. Styles make fights. Aside from the first fight with Duran, DeJesus didn't dominate many names. He edged a very young Duran, and then Duran knocked him out twice. Mancini overwhelms DeJesus, who could be overwhelmed and shut out by guys who didn't hit particularly hard.
That has nothing to do with what I said. Dejesus beat plenty of top guys. In addition to Guts be best Hector Medina, Buzzsaw Yamabe, Edwin Viruet, Alfonso Fraser, Ray Lampkin x2. To compare Dejesus to Douglas us ridiculous as he's the clear number two for the era. In fact I would say he has a deeper resume than Mancini.
I wouldn't. I'd take Jose Luis Ramirez over all the guys you just named. DeJesus beat ONE top guy ONCE (and was knocked out the two other times he fought him), and the rest of the names he faced (Viruet, Yamabe) were no better than this or any other generation of lightweights. Having seen them both, I'd take Mancini over DeJesus in a heartbeat. DeJesus wasn't some master boxer. He was a good fighter. No better than a lot of "good" fighters who won "alphabet" belts.
Ok. Taking Jose Luis Ramirez over those guys is fine but of course it ignores the Duran fight. You're throwing it his best win. If we ignore the Ramirez fight what does his record look like? Also what do you mean by top guys. All the guys I listed were top guys (as in ranked contenders) when Dejesus beat them as near as I can tell.
I'm not saying they weren't ranked. I'm saying they were nothing special compared to ranked lightweights in any other generation. DeJesus is a fine fighter. I just don't think he beats Ray Mancini. Guys can have a good night. You didn't like me bringing up Buster Douglas. But, in addition to taking the title from Tyson, Douglas also beat some names in former and future champs Greg Page, Trevor Berbick, Oliver McCall. He also lost (when he was leading) to Tony Tucker. The only fight against a past or future champ where Douglas looked bad was against Holyfield. Against "champs" ... he was 4-2. That isn't bad at all. That said, if Douglas fought Tyson two more times, I think Tyson would've taken his head off twice. DeJesus defeated one champion (in the fight I posted) to get a belt and he got beaten handily (or knocked out) every time he challenged for other belts. DeJesus was fine. But I wouldn't make him some huge favorite to beat a lot of lightweights who aren't even hall of famers ... including Diego Corrales, Shane Mosley, Acelino Freitas, Edwin Rosario ... let alone guys who are Hall of Famers. He had a good night against Duran the first time. Otherwise, there's not a lot there. I'm not taking that non-title win away from him. He deserved it. But DeJesus wasn't a "great" fighter. He was fine. Just looking at him ... and looking at Mancini ... I'm taking Mancini. That's not to say DeJesus wouldn't put up a fight. But I think he gets overwhelmed. Mancini was relentless, fast and strong. Ray wears him out and stops him. DeJesus was good at a lot of things, but he just never impressed me overall.
