Perry is brutally honest. But what makes him different than other snobs on the forum, is that he is often right.
Don't even see how this can be debated to be honest, it's almost akin to asking if Oliver McCall had a great chin. Of course he did. Mercer's survived the litmus test countless times and shares generations with some murderous punchers who tried their hardest to take his head off. I saw someone comment on the Mercer/Briggs earlier, and they were absolutely correct. Mercer wasn't legitimately stopped, he was trying to milk an illegal shot from Briggs, peeking up from the canvas to see if the ref would buy it. He wasn't much of an actor.
The list of champions and world-class contenders that clown has outright dismissed and disrespected as "unimpressive" or "not much of a fighter" or "nobodies" is insane.
I'd say sometimes he's right, many times he's not good at analzying what he sees imo. Just my opinion
Top Mercer fights to watch, the best he fought: 1 ) Mercer vs Morrison. A highly anticipated match vs two undefeated heavyweights. Morrison starts out hot, Mercer eats tough shots down 3-0 on the cards. Morrison starts to get hit and fades leading to an epic brutal type of knockout where that the referee should have stopped earlier 2 ) Mercer vs Lewis. A 10 round match, Lewis had trouble with Mercer's jab and ended up with a swollen face, doing just enough on my card to win 6-4 in rounds. Anyone who thinks Mercer can't box should view this one. 3 ) Mercer vs Damiani. Damiani was a tall man for the times with good boxing ability. He had the lead but the dogged Mercer kept pressing him, eventually landing an uppercut to the nose that leads to the KO. 4 ) Mercer vs Wlad. Wlad in his prime had an offense to behold with amazing speed and pounding. Mercer was older, but you can see why he was so tough and durable in his prime, getting off the mat early to keep pressing the action, occasionally landing a shot or two of his own. He went out on his shield. 5 ) Mercer vs Holyfield. Mercer makes a good showing but goes down for the first time in his career from a well-placed shot, and yes he was hurt a bit.
Sometimes he is right, but other times he says something outrageous that just is not true, and can quickly be dismissed on film. Like you said he's not the best break it down type on film guy here. Perry is all right as a poster, but he's clearly one of the people who like almost every old time champion while at the same time is very conservative about giving anyone modern credit.
I would say he seems a bit harsh on the modern guys. At the same time, while we were all clamoring for Kovalev, he was far more tepid. Not saying that Sergei is some exposed damage goods. He is still probably a top 30 all time LHW. But the point is that Perry sort of kept us grounded there. You were comparing Kovalevs power to Joe Louis, and you are one of the more respectable posters here :/ I also notice that people talk smack to him, while he is usually just focused on analyzing the subject at hand. The modernists here are good at censuring the opinions of those they disagree with, by putting overwhelming pressure on them. Some people here seem more concerned with talking others down, than talking boxing.
Pascal 2x Cleverly in 4. Resume needs work for sure. He still has time, though he is considering retirement. I think it was more the manner in which he dominated his opponents. Usually very one sided fights. And making good fighters look bad when they stepped in the ring with him.
He's brutal alright. And I suppose he's honest as well in that he intimately believes what he writes. As for being right, we'll have to disagree on that one. I find him horribly dismissive and borderline trollish in many of his comments, which is not the way to win respect for one's opinions unless that person also holds similar views and is merely looking for confirmation. He's also incredibly childish for such a supposedly senior gent and tends to resort to one line dismissals for anything he can't deconstruct logically and in a reasonable way, which is most of the time unfortunately. I'd rather his brutal honesty was connected to a genuine love of the sport, personally, not a fetish-like worship of past fighters at the expense of unfairly downgrading the fighters of the present.
Very tough and very dangerous when he was in the mood.said he wanted to fight Tyson in an interview in Ko magazine not long after turning pro Ray said Tyson needs people to be afraid of him I will knock mike out .At the time I thought he was just talking but Mercer wasn't scared of anyone and a Tyson fight would of been awesome.
His chin is up there with the best at heavyweight. Only dropped once at his best and he took some horrific punches really well at his best. Definitely an atg chin. Shame he wasn't a more consistent fighter as on his day he could take even the very best fighters of the division at the time to the brink.
