USA–Europe Duals (heavyweight), Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, June 1988

Ray Mercer (USA) Defeated Željko Mavrović (Yugoslavia) RSC 1 (2:00).

I'm not surprised at all. It took only 2 minutes for Ray to hurt and stop Mavrovic, even with headgear and amateur soft gloves.

I don't think that Mavrovic had McCall's-like chin like some boxing fans try to say.

He took nice punches from Lennox, but his chin was proven in just 1 fight.

McCall, Holyfield, Tua, Mercer took plenty Lewis' punches without going down.

But unlike Mavrovic they also proved their granite chins in many other fights.

I'd agree that Mavrovic's chin was over rated based on fight. He landed a hard right and Lewis backed off for the rest of the fight. Lewis collapsed in his dressing room.

Tua was bombed out in one round vs Savon in the amateurs.

Did he knock him out or stop him? Bobick stopped Holmes in the ams but it was much tougher to do in the pro's. Mike Weaver was stopped 4 times in his first dozen fights but was a different animal after turning his career around. He took some mighty blows off Coetzee without folding. Ams can be deceiving at times.

The scores for the Lewis fight were as follows.

    • Unofficial AP scorecard: 117-111 Lewis .
    • It seems Lewis did extraordinarily well backing off for the entire fight!
    • Can we have a source for your statement that Lewis collapsed in his dressing room after the fight?

It's the first I've heard of Lewis flaking out !
And I don't recall Lewis backing off either .

Tua went down in the amateurs from a short punch. Not just down, down and hurt bad.

Why do people on here still claim you are "born with a chin". Its nonsense.
You get used to get punched into the face and body, mentally and physically. Like you do in every other physical workload.

Well when Tua was knocked down as a amateur I am pretty sure he was a teenager. His body wasn't fully grown yet. You can't work your chin. If you can't take a punch then you can't take a punch. If you could work out your chin wouldn't everybody just do that and have George Foreman, George Chuvalo, and Oliver McCall chins.

The fight was a bit closer than those scores indicate. If you watched it, you'd know. 119-109, that card is a disgrace. Lewis himself said it was a tough fight.

There is a thread on Lewis collapsing in the dressing room at the box rec forum, it wasn't mine, and it wasn't disputed here. McVey can tell ya about it. He posted the score cards too. Busted.

I remember being very impressed with Mercer at the 88 Olympics. I actually thought he would have given Tyson more trouble than most of his opponents up to that point.

I’ve watched that fight a number of times and he took bombs from a prime Lewis. His chin was insane.

He only weighed in the 210-15 range too from memory. Lewis had a big weight advantage.

Interesting to ponder when people automatically assume a modern SHW automatically is too powerful for a traditional sized heavyweight.

What is even more funny when people like you keep mentioning super heavyweights. Nobody considered 6'5 230 to a super heavyweight when Lewis fought. Nobody considered the 6'7 250 pound Michael Grant to be super heavyweight. Guys like Gerry Conney, 6'5 230, Leroy Jones 6'5 230 to 270, Al Jones 6'6 230, Roy "Tiger" Williams 6'5 240. Jack O'Halloran, 6'6 240. Chuck Wepner 6'5 230 ect from the 70's were never considered super heavyweights. Casual fans like you heard some guy on TV like Max Kellerman, Jim Lampley or some other clueless boxing commentator use that term and now you keep using it like it is legit.

Nobody doing that time though because you were 230 pounds that a 215 pound guy couldn't beat you. That is something that started recently. So anybody over 205 pounds is a heavyweight.

Some guys just have a night where they can't be stopped.

I guess Levi Billups chin is insane too right? He took bombs from Lewis and didn't get stopped. Which is funny since 10 other guys did knock out Billups. Zeljko took some good punches in 1 fight. He never fought anybody else who was good or a big puncher. So taking some good punches in 1 fight doesn't equate to having a world class chin.

Which is basically what I was saying.

Take a second to take in and comprehend what peoples posts are actually saying before flying off on one of your rants and looking like an imbecile. You might actually get to keep one of your alts for longer than a week before being banned if you do.
