mercer knocks him out. Mercer is too big strong and durable. Layne would be game but outmatched stylistically. Layne wouldn’t adapt to box Mercer (despite Layne owning a very underrated left jab).

    Mercer TKO 4 Layne

This post has a lot of irregularities

Layne did not outbox Walcott. He smothered him and out worked him on the ropes, and to be honest Walcott hurt Layne a lot more on film and I question the wide scorecards

Charles and Layne fought 3 times. 31 total rounds. Charles arguably pitched shutouts in the first and 3rd fights, and the second fight was a dubious hometown decision in which refereee Jack Dempsey scored 7 rounds even. Layne won about 4-5 total rounds out of 31 against Charles.

Mercer was 6’1 225lb of muscle. Satterfield and Thompson are 5’8-5’10 stumps who weighed 185-200lb. They are nowhere near as big strong or powerful as Mercer

Mercer took ATG Lennox Lewis 10 life or death rounds.

Layne wouldn’t last 30 seconds with Lennox. Layne drew with Andy Walker and tomato can Dale Hall. He got beat up by west coast hype job Harry kid Mathews. He even got splattered by local club fighter Willie James. By the way all these men are under 200lb and short. I didn’t even mention his struggle against brion or his loss to Lastarza.

Mercer destroys all of them men above

Layne is underrated today and would have made a fine cruiserweight in any era. Let’s leave it at that.

    - Satterfield weighed 180lb. Put him in the 1990s against 6’6 250lb monsters, how does he do? Seriously

    - little 5’8 Turkey boy? How many seconds does he last against 6’6 240lb Lennox Lewis or Tommy Morrison? You think Turkey is more of a threat against them than Mercer? You kidding?

    - Layne at his peak was a good fighter, against light heavyweights and cruiser weights. Layne also had Severe deficiencies in his game which he never rectified. The idea that a 195lb Layne with zero defense and a flabby body can stick his chin out against Lennox Lewis, Tommy Morrison and survive there best punches to give them hell is not only incredulous, it’s downright preposterous

Mercer was just too much man. The way he bossed around the skilled behemoth specimen in Lewis was just amazing. (I rewatched last night). And even tho Lenny pipped that one by a round, Layne would offer none of that resistance. Oh, he was game as they come but he just wasn't the sort of bull to withstand what Mercer would be throwing. I remember reading Dempsey even complaining about Layne's lack of strength and fitness. You had better bring more than your lunch pail to face a prime and motivated Mercer.

And yes, I do believe Mercer hit at least as hard as Marciano if not harder.

Meth head. Throughout Morrison's "prime' he was deteriorating from meth.

And Morrison won the opening rounds, so he hardly got schooled. He was just physically frail.

I am not arguing for Layne--I subscribe to the different eras approach, and I think head to head, Mercer wins, but so many people judge Mercer on a very good loss to Lewis. He also barely won a split decision with Occosio, lost to Ferguson, needed a gift against old Witherspoon, and of course, lost to old-man Holmes. Struggling against Bert Cooper is not an achievement, and even against guys like Kimmul Odum, he looked less than impressive. He could stink it out...and usually did, even when winning.

W hen asked for peak against peak, I have to choose Mercer's best performances. But he was certainly a hot and cold fighter. Mentally and physically he could just check out.

Satterfield knocked out Baker, Cleveland Williams, and beat Nino Valdez all taller than Mercer and weighed pretty close. Please do ur homework. He was far more dangerous and had ten times the better wins as Mercer ever had.
Turkey was close to what Mercer actually was except he prob had better wins then Mercer he beat Lee Q Murray Elmer Ray and Godoy. Seemed to do good enough against the big boys. Once again homework is necessary here.

Layne hung w arguably the best puncher ever in Louis in two exhibitions, beat Walcott and Charles and Thompson and Satterfield. Mercer beat a cracked out Morrison as his best win. U people r insane.
Also I’m not placing Layne against Lewis I’m placing him against Mercer. Jesus people reading comprehension

I’ll go with Mercer. Layne didn’t have the style to outbox and evade Ray and nor did he have the physical tools to trade out right with him.
