Ray Mercer versus Mike Tyson

  1. Lewis didn't stop Mercer, Holyifeld didn't stop Mercer, Holmes didn't stop Mercer, Morrison didn't stop Mercer, Witherspoon didn't stop Mercer ect. It took Mercer to be years past his prime to be stopped by Wladimir Klitschko and i would have favored peak Mercer over him. Mercer was also standing up at the time of the stoppage. Mercer had one of the best chins in the sport and you can make a case that Morrison punches as hard or even harder than Tyson.

I see Mercer being able to outlast Tyson in this match up. Once Tyson finds out that he has a guy in front of him that will not be knocked out and is actually pushing him back and landing power punches, then he will mentally fall apart. Skill wise, Tyson is more talented and if he had shown me in the past that he can be in a tough fight, then i would have chosen him but unfortunately, that never happened. Mercer is just too tough. 3 or 4 rounds, Tyson would fall apart and get tired and discouraged and i see Mercer wearing him down and stopping him late. Match Tyson with a guy who has a weak chin and is a pure boxer, then he will look his best. Ray Mercer by late stoppage.

Mercer is incredibly overrated, probably at Tua level now. He was just a high level journeyman. Whenever he stepped up in comp he consistently lost. He got dominated by old Holmes, lost to Holyfield, edged out by Lewis and was obliterated by Klitschko. He was even beaten by Jesse Ferguson who had lost 5 of his last 7 fights. The best thing he did was KO another overrated 90s fighter in Tommy Morrison(Mercer was well behind on points before the stoppage).

He was a tough guy, great chin but not a good boxer and often looked quite poor in the ring.

Tyson hit clearly harder than Morrison. Not by much, but clearly harder.

I think Tyson wins but has to be careful to push too hard for the KO if it does not come naturally because Mercer was durable and had power. Mike had the better tools

Mike would try and get him out of there early, fail and would be taken apart.

Who did Mercer beat to make anyone think he beats Tyson? Mercer lost to a fat, old Holmes. Tyson bulldozed a 4 years younger Holmes.

Put Ray's back to the wall... and we know he will endure... do we have similar Faith in Mike to Gut it Out ??? i dont think i do.. Mike was a great "On Top" Fighter... As long as the opposition is intimidated and cowed Mike was a Ring Rascal ... But when on the sustained receiving end the Landscape changed... I think Ray's "Effective Substance" would Ultimately Beat Mike's "Style Spectacular" Ray would Take a Beating and come back... I dont Think Mike Does

A fat Jesse Ferguson beat prime Ray Mercer. A prime Jesse Ferguson got trounced by Mike Tyson. Mercer lost to everyone at world level.

Most likely Tyson wins by decision.

It almost happened in the early 21st Century.

Up to Tyson's Lewis fight, I do not see a period when both were active that Mercer could have won. Yes he might of been able to suck it up for 10/12 rounds, maybe even frustrate Tyson a bit. But Tyson only really lost it, when he was beaten, or on the verge of being beaten mentally. I do not think Tyson would be worried about anything Mercer has to offer in the form of offence.

Nah, I think from 1995 or 1996 to 2002 Mercer probably beats Tyson.

But prime v prime, Tyson, for sure.

A prime Lennox Lewis had all he could handle with Mercer yet a past it Lewis destroyed Tinkerbell Tyson with ease, we can all play your game Sandra.

If you take a prime Tyson and put him in with Mercer I think a prime Tyson dishes out tremendous punishment to Ray. I think the fight would be a lot like Tyson's fights with Ruddock and Holyfield where Mercer would stand his ground to Tyson leading to them getting locked up after a bunch of there exchanges. I think Tyson would put a relentless onslaught on Mercer in the early rounds. Mercer is one of the more durable fighters ever but he may not even be able to withstand the early speed and power of a prime Tyson and may some come to the punches or the ref may stop the fight either because of Mercer being helpless after taking some power shots from Tyson or because of the damage Mercer sustains. Should Mercer weather the storm vs a prime Tyson and make it to the later rounds I think Tyson would slow down (so would Mercer)but Tyson would still carry most of the action as the fights pace slows. I'd still expect a clear win for prime Tyson in a long fight I could even see prime Tyson stopping Mercer late.

Now should they have met in the late 90's it would've been a much more interesting fight. Again I think it would be much like the Tyson and Holyfield fight with lots of exchanges and rough stuff on the inside, but with Tyson getting the better of the action. I think it would be very hard fought at this point in Tyson career and I think Mercer would forsure have his moments and win a number of rounds I still see Tyson coming away with the decision by winning most of the early rounds and being able to win some of the mid to late rounds. Would be an excellent match up though especially in the late 90's when Mercer was on top of his game and Tyson wasn't.
