It's guys like you that tarnish Marciano's reputation by force feeding childish statements in estimating him .. feeds right into the nah sayers who claim Rocky is an over hyped white man's life preserver ... tell us again about broken blood vessels on 184 pound LaStarza's arms ... and the Hall of Famers he beat ( without adding they averaged 36 years of age when he fought them ) ...

Try this fact ... Mercer in his whole career fought one man under 200 pounds ... Marciano fought zero large heavyweights in their prime ... if this does not matter then why have weight divisions ? Or do they not matter when Rocky is the topic, he of inhuman strength and heart , leaping tal buildings, ect ...

 

Speaking of which..Didn't Ray Mercer lose to a 42 year old Hall of Famer? Didn't he also lose to a 33 year old Hall of Famer?

If you want to bring age into this equation that's fine. Just be consistent with both fighters. Marciano at least beat all of his "old" hall of famers. He also never lost to gooftrooper fighters like a washed up Jesse Fergusson(and try to bribe them to take a dive in the middle of the fight )

 

Outside of the Wlad fight, Mercer stood up well to straight crosses but he was also rocked by left hooks and floored by a body punch against Holyfield. Marciano would hammer Ray's ribs all night.

 

That's probably the most reasonable match up. Similar careers and styles. I would still go with Layne though at their best, he beat greats on their bad nights, Mercer still lost to them. I believe had it been Mercer against the off-possibly injured Walcott, he would have found a way to lose.

That's one thing people keep forgeting when propping Mercer up. Holmes had not fought real competition yet in his third comeback, Holyfield had been retired for a year and looked rusty as hell, he would go on to be stopped by Bowe in this fragile injury ridden condition. Lewis was still very slowly rebounding and making adjustments after the devestating McCall loss.

 

The likes of Lennox Lewis and Holyfield couldn't stop a prime Mercer and 9 out of 19 Classic posters think Marciano would? Shocking when this would be the biggest, strongest most durable opponent Rocky ever faced

 

Strongest and most durable? Speculation. As a pressuring brawler, Layne held his own against some very powerful men like Turkey Thompson who at 5'8" 210-220 lbs was an absolute monster, also one of the few to stand up to flush Satterfield punishment. I picked Marciano by decision but with his power and sustained attack anything is possible.

Again, Holyfield was rusty and using Mercer as a tuneup. Holyfield isn't much of a knockout artist anyway, often needing to land a very high volume of clean punches to stop a class fighter. As for Lewis, hard to knock a tough guy out when your having trouble controlling the fight and losing rounds. With a few exceptions like the sustained Tyson beating, Lewis also had trouble stopping opponents if they could make it into the later stages of the fight.

Since when was Evander Holyfield an ATG puncher and finisher? :roll:

 

I know it is amazing, but when you are talking to a raid fan base in sports ( any ) you tend to get this type of result from the home town fans.

Mercer had a cinder block for a head, an iron jaw, and a fire hydrant like neck. Morrison could not hurt Mercer either.

The older Mercer took a fearsome beating from a then aggressive Wlad Klitschko, who in my opinion has lights out power when he wants to open up.

Could you imagine Lewis, Morrison, or Wlad Klitschko using those light 50's gloves, and facing cruiser weight sized guys their entire career. Forget the did you see that type of KO's, the ref better be spot on before a tragedy happened.

I seriously doubt Marciano would stop Mercer.

Anyone have film of Ray Mercer vs washed up Gooftrooper Jesse Fergusson? I would love to find the round where Mercer begs to Jesse "please take a dive. Ill give you 100,000".

Irrelevant statement ... Morrison was in his physical prime, undefeated and pumped up in his coming out performance v.s. Mercer ... for three rounds Morrison fought the fight of his life, teeing off full force and landing time and again against Mercer ... Morrison was a monster puncher and Ray took it without flinching ... Mercer also took bombs against Lennox Lewis and stayed the course ... It's safe to say that Morrison and Lewis were both far bigger hitters than all mystical 187 pounds of Marciano ...

This match up is a no brainer ... if he flat Mercer shows up, undertrained and unmotivated, Rocky likely outpunches him to a points win ... he never seriously hurts Ray ... if a motivated Ray shows up its a bad night for the much smaller man ...

AS far as comparing Mercer to Layne sure , as long as you over look the fact that Mercer was an Olympic Gold Medal winner, a much bigger, stronger, faster, harder hitting man who took a much better shot ... putting that aside their twins (like Arnold and Danny)..

 

The only rabid fanbase I see are the ones trumping up Tommy the Dud Morrison as something special. For all his power how many ranked fighters did Morrison stop? None. How many good fighters did Morrison stop? None. No, a washed up Ruddock isn't a good fighter. How many good fighters did he beat? One. Old Foreman whom he ran for his life from. How many times was Morrison put on his ass? I lost count.

 

Marciano outpunches Mercer to a decision, but has a tough night and suffers some damage himself.
