Prime Ray Mercer (90-94) vs Alexander Povetkin. Who wins and how?

Ray was very inconsistent, at his best he could definitely beat Povetkin.. But I can also see him losing on most nights. It's not just skills that win fights, it's consistency and hard work/dedication. My pick is Povetkin, based on that.. Doesn't mean Mercer couldn't win though, but he would have to be having one of his best nights like he did against Lewis.

Good fight between two rugged men. Yeah, Ray could be inconsistent. I might take Alexander by tough decision.

Inconsistent Mercer vs consistently mediocre Povetkin. I'll take Merciless Ray Mercer.

For a smallish(height-wise) Mercer had a GREAT jab.

And his chin.....undentable, even into his mid 40s.

Potvetkin fell prey to the lunging offense fighters have tried to use vs Wladimir since his (suspicious) gassing loss to Brewster and his blitzkrieg loss to Sanders.
Mercer fought Wlad smartly, using his powerful jab and his OH right, but was already 40 y/o, and wasn't in his best shape(though it should be noted that 5 yrs later he gave prime Shannon Briggs all he could handle).

In terms of prime for prime.....this is really a toss-up. One Mercer's best night, I could see him pounding Potvetkin with the jab for 8 rds until landing a monster OH R behind the ear and dropping and stopping him, but on Potvektins best night, I could see him getting inside on Mercer and working him up and down with hooks and UCs, and busting Ray up, turning his face into a fat iron, ironing out a wide points win.

If someone had a gun to my head to make a pick, I'd say Sasha on points. :think

I don't see it, Mercer never stopped anyone with a good chin and didn't even buzz Jesse Ferguson once in two fights. Having said that he did have a good jab when he used it but i just think he was a bit lazy and unpredictable in his conditioning. Povetkin something like 116-112.

Sensible post, but as Lewis's 3rd best win, it's unwise to speak sensibly around here or ppl will consider you a racist.:lol::lol:

Ray would do just enought to lose, Up top he fought to stiff and didn't move his head and Povetkin would score points. Ray would throw some hard combos on the inside then do nothing for stretches. This isn't a fight he could win on points, and although he has some power, what Povetkin took from Wlad makes me believe he would last all 12. Povetkin UD12

Povetkin is a nightmare for the black American style. Knowing how easily Povetkin dealt with future HOF'ers like Byrd and Rahman I will Have to go with Povetkin by stoppage here.

Mercer for me never quite fulfilled his potential. I thought he was a great amateur and a slightly podgy pro. Solis like, although he was better than Solis. Povetkin looks like he is steadily getting there, just a shame for him that Vladimir is so dominant. I would call this for Povetkin because Mercer was never in great shape.
