Match the best versions up between these two (so that means the Mercer that wasn't in-consistent vs. the Arreola that actually showed up in shape)
Mercer should win a decision at his best. I think his jab and durable chin see him through comfortably.
Arreola gets absolutly BATTERED in this fight. Mercer UD12 (assuming theres some belt on the line) and Arreola takes a beating.
Mercer by late stoppage. His jab would would bust up the game Arreola. Mercer's concrete chin would be more than up to the tasl of absorbing Arreola's shots. Mercer gets the TKO around the 9th round.
Wow this is an awesome matchup, better than my Morrison vs Arreola thread. In this one, I am leaning towards Mercer by hard fought decision. I just think it would come down to a few things. Mercer in his prime had an iron chin and although he did come to fights in poor shape a few times, against his top opposition he came into the fights in top shape. I think Mercer would be unbothered by Arreola's power and find a way to get inside and work Arreola's poor midsection and by the late rounds Arreola would be more worn out in a grueling fight similiar to Mercer vs Bert Cooper. Another edge I would give to Mercer would be he faced far better competition than Arreola.
Better competition ? Whenever he stepped up he lost................he was battered from pillar to post by the glasschinned Morrison until the Duke ran out of gas, outlasting a opponent by eating flush shots shows a fighters limitations. If Mercer stays behind his jab he should win but he faded in EVERY major fight he had been in......Holmes,Lewis or Holyfield made him gas out in the second half.............I have never seen Arreola gas out so this could be interesting in the latter rounds. I don't think this is a foregone conclusion that Mercer takes it.
