The best version of Tua would be too much for Mercer. Mercer even in his best performances against Evander and Lewis had a low work rate, throwing 30-35 punches per round. Tua against Ike threw double that. Only way Mercer wins is by KO and Tua was too durable for that. Mercer was never in the greatest shape, hence the low work rate and he wasn't a slick boxer who could control the pace against Tua with movement or defensive skills. Mercer was a tank, he walked you down and against Tua he would be outgunned and outworked.
Mercer on points behind the jab, but he would be forced to fight at times as Mercer himself did not have quick feet and couldn't move very well, this fight is pretty much like what Whyte vs Andy Ruiz would look like, just a 90s version
I think Mercer's style really plays into Tua's strengths and I don't see bringing out any of Tua's weaknesses. I think Tua busts him up in an excellent, high-action punchout.
Id say Ray Mercer UD. But Tua could punch like a nuclear bomb shockwave and both had great chins so this would be a FIGHT
I agree ... at their best two incredibly tough , iron chinned blocks of granite ... I saw Ray Mercer live once at a promo for a fight against Golota that was called off at NYC's Felt Forum .. I remember feeling this was the most physically intimidating creature I had ever seen in my life .. Golota looked like a young kid next to him .. Mercer radiated massive power .. Tua very similar .. in about 1998 I went to a boxing writers dinner in NYC and Tua was there , real young in a suit and I'm only 5' 10" and he was my height but looked the same width .. a true block of granite ... I'd seen Tyson numerous times around NYC and he looked tiny next to those two animals ..
