Prime Wilder fights the best version of Mercer. Wilder has a powerful right hand but Mercer has a titanium chin and more than enough punching power to hurt Wilder. Does a hard chin outlast a hard punch?

Wilder wouldn't outbox him realistically, and he would need to knock Mercer out. Mercer is pretty overrated here but this only goes one way. Mercer is the type of guy Wilder would have ducked after getting beat up in sparring

Mercer isn't as good a boxer as Fury, but he's more durable and hits harder.

Wilder stops him late. Mercer had a great chin, but leaky defense and would be coming forward a lot opening up. Mercer could crack, but he wasn't some terminator with lethal 1-punch power and could lose focus too.

I see Wilder staying at long range, losing rounds but getting the timing right for his jab and right hand. Mercer would attempt to smother him, throw his crude hooks, and would land a few glancing shots and maul Wilder in occasion. Wilder ties him up, jabs, backs up, misses with his right, repeat for multiple rounds. But then Wilder does connect, and once he does he stops missing and racks up damage. Wilder also starts finding a home for his uppercut on Mercer's chin.

By the 10th, both men are badly hurt and marked up, but Mercer is worse off, face disfigured by right hands. Ref stops it.

How? Wilder isn't likely to drop him in his prime, and has no chance of outboxing any decent version of him, so how is Wilder winning rounds? I see this as Mercer winning a comfortable decision while tanking some absolutely hellacious shots here and there.

Mercer was, at his best, a good boxer with good power and a god tier chin. Not elite skills, not elite power, but both pretty good. And that chin and his fearlessnes let him take a lot of chances, which was always fun to watch. I remember him getting caught by an epic right uppercut from Lewis when he was trying to rush in. He took a step back, shook his head, then charged right back in. That was always a fun bit about watching him. Gave zero ****s about being hit.

Really good way of putting it - 100% spot on. Mercer was good but he was a bit overrated.

I can imagine the last sentence actually happening before to other fighters in real life! Lol.

Mercer was a Stiverne level fighter. The hate for Wilder is ridiculous.

Wilder won a 12 round decision over Bermane Stiverne. I think he could “ possibly “ do it here

He has only himself to blame for accomplishing so little in his own era
We don't even know where he rates in his own time

A few months ago I made a thread about how Ray Mercer was overrated and people said "hes not overrated".

    Yes. Yes he is.

This will come as a shock to some people but Wilder only was trailing before one of his KOs. Some of you act like Wilder is incapable of winning rounds.

Wilder would most likely "Arreola" Mercer by staying on the outside jabbing and then unleashing a fast right hand in rd 8-10. But Mercer would most probably bust him up quite good during the fight.

Mercer was ridiculously inconsistent but on a good night he became within a hairs breadth of outboxing Lennox Lewis. That’s enough for me to favour him heavily over a one trick pony like Wilder if we’re talking best vs best.

This is a fight where we might favor Mercer, but we wouldn't be surprised if Wilder knocked him out...
