Ray Mercer vs Deontay Wilder

Mercer gets alot of milage out of those losses but there is some context missing.

1. Holyfield was coming off his worst performance of the decade vs Moorer and then looked shot vs Bowe after. Whatever the reason was for Holyfield's heart issue during that period between 1994-1995 Holyfield looked lackluster.

2. Lewis was on the comeback trail after the upset loss to McCall and wanted to impress in America for a possible big fight vs Tyson down the road. I'm of the opinion that Lewis chose to slug with Mercer to prove his toughness and to also show an exciting style to the American public who were still not totally sold on Lewis.

 

Lewis was getting outjabbed. Small ring but he took a lot of power shots despite blocking a lot of them.

But in regards to Wilder vs Mercer, Mercers chin can absorb Wilders power for some time even though Wilder could stagger him, Wilder has bad footwork and Mercer has better pedigree and technique. He can hurt Wilder like Eric Molina did. Mercer has a better chance of outboxing Wilder than the other way around. Wilder could knock him out at some point, but Mercer will probably be landing more shots

 

I'm sorry I'm not that sold on Mercer.

Most of his notable wins were fights in which he lost numerous rounds to come from behind.

Morrison = Lost every round until he finally found Morrison's suspect chin.

Damiani = Lost every round before landing a freak uppercut on the tip of Damiani's nose.

Outside of those performances there's not lot of other notable wins apart from a 38 year old Witherspoon in which most felt he lost that fight.

I like Mercer he was brave had good chin but I feel like he gets a tad overrated personally.

 

Then why did you pick him to beat Tua ? Tua has a better resume, but resumes don't always win fights, styles are a factor

I agree, mercers overrated, but so is Wilder and Mercer has a granite jaw to counter his power. Wilder has a more limited skill set than everyone you just listed

Tua is a 5'10 short plodding Heavyweight that Mercer could outbox.

I also think Tua is overrated.

 

Lewis was 6'5. Just as you are not on Mercer, I am not sold on Wilder despite his superior
achievements, especially against a Tank like Mercer who keeps coming forward looking for power shots.

Tua has better wins than Wilder, but thats off topic

35 votes to 8. The fat lady has not only sung, her band has packed up and she's moved onto the next dream fight arena where Wilder fights McCall. Mercer moves on and up to a shot against Michael Moorer.

 

If it worked that way, Floyd Mayweather would have loses and George Foreman would've made more title defenses than John Ruiz.

The Mercer that lost to Lennox would stop Wilder. The Mercer that lost to Wlad would get stopped by Wilder as would the Mercer that got embarrassed by Holmes, but then the Mercer who lost to Evander before Lennox would beat Wilder. Definition of up/down fighter.
