I highly doubt Mercer stops him. Ruddock withstood a terrible beating from Tyson in the rematch, yet still lasted the distance. Mercer by competitive decision.
Ruddock by decision. Tough fight to call though, I could see Mercer winning a decision too, but not the lazy unmotivated inconsistent Mercer of 91, but maybe the 96 version.
Best Ray shows up, lean towards a decision victory for him. Less than motivated Mercer, I favor Ruddock. Also don't see a stoppage for either.
That's my pick as well.. Even though it would seem unlikely that two big punchers who liked to tade would go to the cards, I think its a very real possibility here. I don't think Mercer had the power to stop the Ruddock who went the distance with Tyson, and nor would Mercer's chin fail either.. Ruddock was a slightly more skilled fighter, and I think he takes it on points.
That's my call also. Mercer was no great shakes in 1991. Before Holmes schooled him, Ray had to come from behind to stop Morrison, and Damiani put on a master class before a fluke light uppercut shattered his nose. Mercer wasn't very smart about the warnings provided him by these experiences, and Larry made him pay for it. Ray had won over the 12 round distance though, so Ruddock would need to be sure he didn't gas late. Intriguing match up, and a late come from behind stoppage by Mercer is a reasonable conclusion.
