No, Mercer's power is FADED....his prime was in 1995 for God's sakes! Why is the MMA world thinking Mercer is a world class hitter? He's not! The mans just got skills and can take a damn punch like no one else's business. He's 48 years old, his power has always been at best, slightly more than average. Just remember this: his greatest kayo win was over the glass jawed Tommy Morrison! Think in boxing terms people, Mercer's been done as a fighter for nearly a decade.
Fedor would have no reason to fight Mercer, and he won't. I'm still trying to figure out why Sylvia thought it was a good idea.
:rofl I agree, WTF was he thinking? Fedor has absolutely zero reason to fight Mercer. I love how as soon as ANYBODY wins a fight in the HW division EVERYBODY asks the same question. ______ vs Fedor? :tired
Same logic I suppose Bart Gunn had when he agreed to take a shoot fight against Butterbean at Wrestlemania 15. He done won the legit 'Brawl For All' tournament, he didn't have to fight Esch, he could have taken easier, more lucrative fights in boxing [like he wanted to do, or so he said] but went ahead with it anyway. Butterbean dropped Gunn in the first 10 seconds, then kayoed him some 28 seconds later. Gunn was never heard from again in America, he now wrestles in Japan. I imagine Sylvia was hoping that since Ray was so washed up as a boxer, that it would be a safe fight against a somewhat big name in boxing. Mercer's prime was back in the mid 90's, never was quite the force after losing a decision to old Larry Holmes, though he would give Holyfield and Lewis tough fights....Sylvia looked at this all wrong, still forever chasing the impossible dream of making a believer out of all fans that he is a great fighter in MMA. Sylvia needs to stop trying to appease the fans and quit taking such hard fights, gimmick matches or not. Besides that, as stated before, he made a gross calculated mistake of wanting to stand toe to toe with Mercer. He should have used a different tactic than that----course then again, if Mercer is right in saying Kimbo double crossed him in their match by saying he'd box, not grapple, Mercer may have just not given Sylvia any time to do so at all. In ways, this situation reminds me of when Tommy Morrison had that "mma" bout that was clearly a boxing match held inside a cage with 4 ounce gloves on. Morrison, well passed it, still won over the MMA guy, because he bitched enough to have the rules changed to his own comfort zone. MMA strikers are not in the same level as boxing strikers, it may as well be amateurs facing professionals when it comes to punching prowess---or more apt, like Toughman competitors taking on a world champ. Sylvia was wide open and didnt have his guard up even. How ****ed up is that? Sylvia's proved in the past anyways, to be vulnerable to over hand rights. Mercer, even a shadow of what he once was, showed that Sylvia could be taken out if he could just be pressed. Bigger they are, harder they fall, so they say. I still call it one hell of a feat in a sense---Sylvia's never been knocked out cold til now. I think these MMA guys wanting to do boxing, should just box off with one another first, then take on novices and go on from there. Bring on Arlovski-Sylvia, imo, that would be a fair and equal boxing match between two MMA guys.
I think the MMA hate crowd are getting a little carried away because of the quick Mercer KO.... we always knew a pro boxer has that punchers chance... because it actually happened doesnt mean that every pro boxer is gonna whup every MMA fighter, it also doesnt mean that this was a million to one chance.... Mercer caught Silvia with a solid shot to the chin & thats that.... could he catch Fedor ?... possibly but my money says no. Lets not get crazy here, boxers will always stand a better chance in a cage than MMA fighters will in a boxing match because they can use their game (boxing) as well as the opponents game (MMA)... an MMA fighter cant do 3 quarters of what he trains to do in a boxing bout (wrestling, BJJ, thai kicks usually) Im sure this wont be the last time a boxer KOs an MMA fighter in an MMA fight but those who think that MMA guys are bums & boxers would win the majority of times in a cage are plain thick as **** & a tad ignorant of reality. Ps. Fedor by armbar rd1 Mercer :smoke
im embarrassed to be posting on this little gem quite frankly.. is not only insulting to the great russian but shows that outerdrake once again has no right to be commenting in this forum or on the sport itself. outerdrake, esb's answer to kimbo slice.
No, Mercer still has quality power. He used to have fantastic power. Yes, Mercer's power has faded but he can still punch, especially in MMA gloves. Mercer's still been sparking people even though he is old. Mercer is called Merciless for a reason. His power was good in boxing where he had to wear bigger gloves. In MMA he can be more accurate and powerful with his punch. Plus he is landing on guys who haven't developed, nor have, the same durability as boxers when it comes to taking punches.
Everything you say is ****ing stupid RUFUS. What is the last thing to fade from a boxer with age? POWER. His technique and skill in boxing has diminished. He still stands a Puncher's chance in the ring with anyone because of his power.
Learning how to punch is like learning how to ride a bike. Once you know how and you spend the best part of your life doing that that ability itself never goes away.
please stop mentioning fedor along with the likes of mercer etc,its just insulting to the great russian.. its like putting kimbo slice in the same sentence as rob kaman its just not right.
