good post TG, these klit lickers just need a dose of reality. apparently in their world its impossible for a white person to NOT be a fan of theirs and its nothing but black people that hate him. truly are a pitiful, racist bunch these klit lickers. but back on point i do think you're being a bit harsh on wlad, he knows how to fight only one way yes but that one way of fighting has gained him much success and has led to pure dominance competition aside. it wouldn't be an easy night for either fighter imo, mercer struggles with tall rangey boxers and wlad struggles with rugged pressure fighters. both would be fighting their kryptonites, 50/50 fight for me.

Fantasy matchups are hard to call. I'm sure in a fantasy matchup wlad beats sanders and mercer beats 42 year old holmes. The truth was obviously different.

I can't say who would win but i'd favour wlad to beat him.

Interesting point. Merciless would have an easy time with Wlad circa the Corrie Sanders fiasco. In short, he'd be too aggressive and too willing to absorb a few to give a few.

The current incarnation of Wlad could very well decision Mercer. I liked Ray in his prime, but let' s not exaggerate his talents after the fact.

maybe I am being harsh on wlad, but I take mercer based on the opposition he faced

    mercer's top opposition

    -Lewis
    -Holyfield
    -Holmes
    -Morrison
    -wlad

    Wlads top opposition
    -Imbragimov
    -Peter
    -chagaev
I struggle to fill out 2 more worthy names.. but anyway the point is mercer is more proven and IMO would light wlad up

How does Ray losing 4 of 5 big fights make him more proven? And keeping in mind that the worst beating came from Wlad?

How about adding Chris Byrd to your list? After the first loss to Wlad he beat Tua (2001) and Holyfield (2002).

 Why would Peter be a worthy name and not Byrd? Also, Wlad actually beat all those guys. Mercer beat one of his that you've listed. ...Ibragimov also has an extra letter 'm' here.

Klit-Lickers love to bring up the race/xenophobia card rather than actually discuss boxing.

I think the Wlad of recent years would outpoint Mercer. Mercer had a great chin and could take some bombs. I think he'd show his terrific chin as he'd take his share of right hands but stay on his feet and last the distance.

Mercer at his best would have a better chance against the younger Wlad, such as the one he actually fought, who was more aggressive and therefore, more hittable.

A couple of thoughts about Mercer fights:

The Lewis fight was strange. Mercer hadn't fought in over a year, showed up heavy, and gave Lewis hell. I think Lewis traded too much though, or perhaps, hadn't fully developed in terms of controlling tempo/distance.

Mercer could be lazy or just plain look bad. Damiani was beating him until Mercer just threw that uppercut out of the blue that caught Damiani's nose and broke it. Mercer was totally out of it against Ferguson (when he supposedly offered a bribe), an off-night or just maybe he didn't train hard.

Mercer also lost to a 42-year old Holmes, but stylistically, I wouldn't factor this into a Wlad matchup. Holmes spent most of the fight schooling Mercer on the ropes. His ability to be effective off the ropes, intelligence, and experience really showed here. I really doubt Wlad would fight Mercer in this manner. He'd try to keep it in the middle of the ring.

I watched it again today and weird is definitely the right word to describe it. One of the very few fights where Lewis actually looks discouraged between rounds (4-5-6).

Now I'm watching Evander/Mercer and Ray looks pretty damn good..

Thanks for Fantasy Boy for unintentionally luring me to watch more Mercer.

Mercer is like Tua, could have would have bla bla but he never did, good Amateur career but at the pros his signature win is Tommy Chin............after taking a beating and being behind.

If you get outboxed by a ancient Holmes, clowned by the shot trialhorse Ferguson then there is something wrong with you aka you ain't elite, we are not talking about a freak KO we are talking comprehensively outboxed........remember Tyson sparring punching bag Mr Limited himself McCracken beat Holmes handily, even clowing around during the fight with the audience.

Mercer would start out fairly decent like in the Holy/Lewis fights but eventually would run out of gas or after eating some nasty leather go survival and claim Robbery afterwards as witnesssed in both fights. His power is nothing exceptional, he is slow of foot but has decent handspeed and a good jab but his defense is his chin which is a disaster once you step up.....the proof is in the pudding.

Anyway, WK decisive decision after a couple of close encounters in the early rounds.

OH, I'm very much aware of Mercer's Olympic career. Unforunately, as a pro he displayed very little in the way of technical ability...walking forward and jabbing aimlessly..hoping for a slugfest that wouldn't come, banking on his durability and power that mysteriously only materialized against the China Duke. Lazy? What's the difference if he's just limiting himself?

Mercer and McCall aren't dominating any division. Mercer had 2 chances to enter the rankings and compete for a title...he was upset by oldman Holmes and Ferguson whom he tried to bribe to take a dive he was so badly outclassed. Hardly a great talent in the wrong place at the wrong time, he just wasn't that good. After that it was inactivity, injuries, and health problems.

McCall...doing anything but the odd upset and having long term success? Don't make me cry, man.

Morrison is better than anyone Wlad ever beat, in terms of the danger he would present him. :deal
