I don’t care what u think of the opposition. I’d disagree whole heartedly on Layne who beat men that 60s hws struggled with before he gave up. His speed was just fine as was his reflexes. It’s amazing that someone who was 6”1 195 for the better part of his career before Marciano ruined him was a “slob”. He def wasn’t the hardest trainer but he was strong quick enough and game. Lastarza was protected but it was obvious he was a talented fighter. The point is they were prime not crippled old men.

Layne wouldn't see the top 50 in either Mercer's or today's confused heavyweight division. Outside of his great heart he just didn't have any talent or resounding physical advantages. He was a good, game plodder for this day, though. Probably would do decent as an undercard cruiser today, until the wear and tear of more skilled, modern fighters caught up to him.

He was a better version of Lyle. Faster and better stamina. He had two wins over HW champs. He had wins over fine contenders in Thompson and Satterfield and Brion. As well as wins over trial horses. That’s a much deeper resume than most contenders who ever lived.

How’d Mercer fare when he faced an old man who had to conserve his legs?
