As you like. I’ll take the legend over the also-ran.

Mercer was a seriously tough cookie. I don't know about Rocky's back, but I could see Mercer winning a decision in a real war. It's not Mercer's size that's the issue, it's his chin. Sure his stamina wasn't great, if this is a 15 rounder maybe I switch to Rocky but otherwise it's Mercer for me.

This is a silly way to put it because after a certain point weight stops mattering, it has diminishing returns even.
Buster Mathis vs Joe Frazier? But you could say oh but could Duran beat Charles! Look at that weight difference.
Not a perfect example, I know Mathis is just mostly fat. They were both HW framed guys, big enough look at Holyfield fight Bowe…
    35lbs difference.
Ray Mercer in shape is 225lbs Marciano at his best was about 190lbs give or take. Similar difference.

Thirty pounds overweight obese Lhy who had been kod multiple times once by a middleweight ,a man who got his ranking by beating two past their best men.

He wasn’t always. What did he do to go from being 5”11 186 to 6”2 and ripped…very strange. But I’m pretty sure Marciano could find a weight room w magic pills to get him a little bigger like Evan Fields and every other fighter the last 40 years. Mercer is leagues below Marciano even w out the roids. There r levels to this stuff.

Mercer in shape and putting on the best performance of his life was 238, whereas Marciano was at 184 for his title win over Walcott. Ray was not the most toned guy, but I think that it's obvious that his weight not only matters here, but also isn't exclusively fat. We can see the difference between men like Mercer and men like Buster Douglas, who went from 242 to 231 in his best performance, before ballooning back up to 248 and getting knocked out by a man 36 pounds lighter than him.

Yes, the Duran statement is a bit of a strawman, but I was using it as a pseudo explanation to try and beat some sense into some of the people in this thread. Roberto is obviously the better fighter pound for pound than Rocky, as Rocky is to Ray- But when we're talking about a straight up fight, that doesn't matter. He was able to bull men like Cooper and Holmes while he was still green (Yes, Larry controlled the fight against him, but he still was able to hurt him bad during the course of the match), and pull of 4-6 and 4-5-1 splits against Holyfield and Lewis respectively. Ray is strong, Ray is tough, Ray is skilled, and Ray is way too big and strong for Marciano.

If you gave me Morrison, Ruddock, Damiani, Cooper, Seldon, most anybody from the 90s heavyweight scene, I'd tell you that Marciano would've beaten em, but Mercer is a bridge too far. Peak Ray is a difficult bout for Marciano because he loses all of his best attributes against Mercer. Rocky has an ATG punch? Ray has an all time great chin. Rocky was a master on the inside and strong as a bull? Ray was devastating in clinches and even stronger.

Why would a man who could push a 247 pound Lennox Lewis into the ropes with ease have issues doing the same with someone at 184? And even if you give Rocky an extra six pounds, do you still think that's gonna work out well?

Morrison was a lot quicker than Marciano ,a lot bigger and hit harder imo.
Mercer and Lewis had a war and many think Mercer won.
Marciano would not go 8 rds with Lewis imo.

Marciano was applying that pressure to old men who for the most part were under 200 pounds.

Marciano is the greater fighter by far,but that doesn't necessarily mean he beats a very durable, strong 220lbs man who could crack a bit himself.

You asked how he beat Mercer, I explained.
When confronted with physical facts Rockistas always say, well Rock would be 220lbs today, even if he was,and even if he suffered no loss of his average at best speed and his excellent stamina,we are matching men as they actually were in the ring, not some hypothetical idealistic version of them.
    BTW Holyfield beats Marciano too,imo

Let's not forget that Mercer's punch was quite a lot better than just a "bit" strong, too. Bobby Czyz, who got his ass whooped by Holyfield and Sanders, said that the man who hit him the hardest was Ray Mercer, who he sparred a few rounds with- And these are roided out Evan Fields and "The Sniper" we're talking about.

If Marciano weighed a whopping 7 pounds more we wouldn’t hear a word about his weight. No one complains around here about Louis, Dempsey (who weighed as light as Marciano), Quarry, Walcott, Patterson (who was the same weight), Charles etc. for some reason it’s only Marciano who would have all these magical problems weighing the same as those men or a whooping 7 pounds less.
