I saw it and yes both guys took a lot of punishment. It was no easy day at the office for Frazier. I just liked to zone in on the 15th round. Damn those were hard shots from a big time HW fighter. Credit to Ali for finishing that fight after taking those shots. That right there just shows you that Ali is not invincible. He's a man and not a myth. He's a man. Is it possible that his myth has gotten a little out of control. It's like he said "I'm the greatest", so much that everybody starting believing him and everybody just forgot that Joe Frazier opened up a titanic can of whoop ass on Ali in that last round.

Maybe I just have this perception that the public considers Ali this invincible fighter. You could go up to a kid today and tell him hey did you know that Joe Frazier almost knocked him out and beat him badly? And they would be confused. They would think well how could anybody beat Ali that hard?

Yes, but what was Ray doing, test driving tanks for General Patton? Or was he an athletic instructor in Ft. Dix, New Jersey who boxed exhibitions and went home to Harlem on the weekends?

I know. Donald Trump got 3 college deferments. Then in his senior year, got one of those injury deferments (while on the baseball and football teams) to avoid Vietnam. His punishment? They made him President as well. PLUS, he insulted a REAL war hero in John McCain. And yet, they STILL made him president.

During a time of legal and blatant racism and segregation... why would Ali as a black man in the civil rights era want to fight for a country that hated his kind?

What two years was he out of boxing? I'm looking at his record and I see his schedule was less frequent in 1943 and 1944, but he still fought six times each year.

The war wasn't about blacks vs whites, it was about protecting the nation half which was made up of blacks.

Do you think Ali would have been the only black man to be serving during that time of overt racism and segregation?

But that is fine if he didn't want to go, as we know everyone has a choice and sometimes there are consequences that we need to face when we make such choices. And the consequences which Ali was fully aware of when he made that choice, was 5 years and a 10,000 dollars fine.

Yet again Ali did not want to be a man and face the consequences in regards to his choices which says a lot about his character. He fought tooth and nail just so he could avoid going to go jail which was the common punishment for man who decided they wished to turn the back on their own nation. He didn't want to fight heroically for his country and yet was unwilling to do the time for his decision.

Who wants to fight for a country who invades foreign lands for economic and political gain?
Ali did the right thing, before you're a 'countryman', you're a human of the world.

I would say it was completely different circumstances. The 40s and the 60s were 2 different periods. Robinson had a country behind him to an extent, whereas Ali had it against him.

Also All was a heavyweight, lost his prime years. Robinson helped in the army before his prime and down the years developed into a middleweight which had no bearing.

    Very different circumstances
