1. Harry Greb 2. Benny Leonard 3. Willie Pep 4. Barney Ross 5. Tony Canzoneri 6. Roberto Duran 7. Jimmy Wilde 8. Eder Jofre 9. Jack Dempsey 10. Carlos Ortiz
wow thats a interesting list nie to see some different names getting put there but i disagree with afew
I should stop messing about or people will think I'm mad. 1. Henry Armstrong 2. Harry Greb 3. Ray Robinson 4. Sam Langford 5. Benny Leonard 6. Ezzard Charles 7. Roberto Duran 8. Willie Pep 9. Archie Moore 10. Barney Ross
Because, when you take away the fame and historical significance, he didn't do as much as the rest. A lot would need to be added for Ali's record to match Ezzard Charles', for instance, who beat Archie Moore three times - that's the equivalent of Joe Louis or Larry Holmes once a year in '65, '66 and '67. Jimmy Bivins? That's like beating Evander Holyfield four times. The Joey Maxim wins would have to be balanced out by Ali defeating someone like Jerry Quarry, but five times instead of two. This is without mentioning such names as Charley Burley, Lloyd Marshall and Jersey Joe Walcott.
Ali's resume is stacked though, and he's cleanly the best fighter in the history of his division IMO. Clatter these two together and he's fine for the top 10.
Quick question about p4p rankings... does the fact that Ali would beat everyone on that list or mostly every fighter ever in the history of boxing play a part in ranking him? I don't know much yet about the great boxers you mentioned but it's just hard to fathom a list without Ali.
It's got some good names, some great names, and a lot of names who are famous because they fought The Mouth.
Unquestionably. If you were ranking fighters pound for pound and only considering guys who had fought at one weight throughout the career, who would you have above him?
No, it means little. It's not 'pound-for-pound' then. We are rating fighters for how good they were for their own weight.
Benny Leonard and Willie Pep, but in fairness they beat several contenders in the weights above. Not sure about Carlos Monzon, probably just underneath Ali, as would be Joe Louis.
I know this thread isn't serious but I think it's arguable that there are 5 other fighters in history who could be ranked above Sugar Ray Robinson. If someone had Harry Greb, Sam Langford, Benny Leonard, Joe Gans and Henry Armstrong, for example, above Robinson I dont think that would be absurd in the slightest.
Its probably fair enough to have one or two of them above Ray but having him outside the top five is criminal.
