LaMotta x5, Armstrong, Gavilan x2, Bobo Olson x4, Turpin, Graziano, Fullmer, and Basilio. You think Benitez, Duran x2, Kalule, Hearns, and Hagler is better than that?

It's not just the names on Robinson's resume, but how he won them. SRR beat every name on that list convincingly at least once, something Leonard can never say he did. Also, Robinson in his prime never lost to a smaller fighter, no matter how great he was.

That, to me, is the difference between the two.

    I also buy Robinson.

Leonard is an ATG with an impressive resume, but Robinson's resume is way better, showing how great he was.

I also like Robinson-by a lot! We're talking miles here folks.

Perhaps if Ray leoanrd had more names on his resume (I discount the hagler win because hagler was a mere shell by that time) we'd all be more convinced.

I'm talking names like Pryor, Curry, Nunn, Jackson, McCallum for extra measure and Norris. Those names are all that seperate Leonard from greatness.

Benitez, Duran, Hearns, Hagler, how on earth could they compare or substitute for your array of monsters

Why not just add them in then? It couldnt have been that hard considering how good he was

    SSR.

If Leonard was in SSR shoes, I feel that he would not have done as well fighting so offen against good comp'.

Leonard scores well on a head to head basis, by beating Benitez and Hearns, but I feel that during his career he had one eye on his legacy.

His wins over Duran and Hagler were not as a result of him being better but more a result of good timing and cunning by Leonard.

One of the best ever, but not nearly as good as SSR.

leonard could of created a legacy to match up to srr if he hadnt of retired early in early 80's. the second part of his careers was a joke

umm Duran would have brutalised Whitaker IMO who just didnt have that power to keep a uy like Duran off. In terms of Leonard and Robinson, I think that Leonard is a long way behind Robinson anyway which you look. IMO he lost to hagler and he lost to Hearns second time around. So that leaves basically one win over duran, one over hearns and Benitez. Better than SRR? i aint going to put down his resume it would be too long for gods sake! :L

I think that after 13 rounds and after being cut and slightly behind in the scoring, the harder, meaner and more powerful Robinson wins the battle of the Sugars by a 14th round stoppage.

It would come down to chin, toughness, grit and raw power for SSR.

Not much to pick between them, really, in terms of who had more ability. They both had great chins, blistering handspeed, and serious power. Both knew how to get the win, etc.. Who I prefer depends on whose videos I've been watching more of lately.

I think this one is very difficult. There is one thing that Robinson does distinctly better than Leonard, though, and that is punching when moving.

To say something conclusive about this I would like to see Robinson's fights against Gavilan, though, and that is not going to happen. So, John Garfield, if you read this, did you see any of these fights and, if so, what can you tell us about them?

The win over Hagler was no joke.
