how do you get to have a great chin when so many people are flooring you including the club fighters and Ray is only 27. he had the handspeed but no way did he have the chin. Leonard, it's like he was from a different stock and the whole Hagler farce was a joke - his one comeback fight extended into a series of remedial contests that included Lalonde

Robinson, on the other hand was the genuine article

I think he runs him close but the 2 handed power of Robinson sets him apart IMO.

Good fight (wonder why their has never been a Pea-Duran thread on ESB:huh) but if your taking the best of both guys at LWT then the Duran that beat Dejesus in their 3rd fight whacks any version of Whitaker, the punch power would have Pea fighting too defensively & Duran`s pressure & accuracy + his ability to let his hands go when he has an opponent cornered would give him a points win... close but clear.
Duran is a better fighter IMO anyway, I rate both men extremely high & like both so there aint much bias either way.

1 of the best performances by any fighter in history IMO, an absolute masterclass from about 6/7 rds onwards, I watch that fight regularly, video footage of why he is rated as he is IMO, tho rds 8 & 11 are cut short for some ****ed up pointless reason which mentally torchers me if Im being honest, if anyone knows were I can buy the FULL fight please pm me, it would be much appreciated.

Whitaker doesn't need the power to keep Duran off him. He's got the style to do it.

If Duran tried to box and pick his spots against Whitaker like he did De Jesus in the third fight he'd just get straight up out-boxed. Only if he were to imply the best of his swarming style, a la Leonard I, would he be able to get the better of Whitaker. At WW I'd take the Duran of the Leonard and Palomino fights over any WW version of Whitaker, probably. But at LW I think the quicker, more fleet of foot Whitaker would fare better against the more methodical version of Duran (which is strange because that Duran was probably more effective overall, just not against this style), though it's possible the swarming younger version of Duran would take him off his game moreso than vice versa. It'd be a very competitive affair either way.

At LW, I think the Duran of the De Jesus III fight would have a better chance against Whitaker than the verison who fought Buchanan, etc. I just think Whitaker would time that earlier Duran far better. While Duran was more aggressive and raw back in his early lightweight days, I don't think he'd have the experience or defense to cope with Whitaker. Yes, the more matured version who fought De Jesus maybe stood off more. But he was far better at setting everything up and controlling the ring. Defensively he was far more well rounded as well. The later version wasn't as one dimensional.

I think Sweet Pea is right that it would be a close fight....
I think Robbi is right that the Duran of Dejesus III with his controlled pressure boxing has the better chance than the swarming Buchanan version....

Duran aint an easy man to outbox... even if your Whitaker... & its Pea who will be taking the harder punches in every rd, he`d find Duran hard as hell to hit cleanly too, its not a one way street in that regard.

I agree, The Duran that fought Buchanan was really just a rough & ready mugger but by the time ov the 2nd De Jesus fight you could see the more rounded pressure box/fighter evolving & by the 3rd De Jesus fight he looked the finished article in all round ring generalship. As Angello Dundee said "Duran's slick" he don't get hit much, his defensive boxing capabilities are very much underestimated.

I'am a huge fan ov sweet-pea but i feel it would have been a desperate affair 4 him over 15 rd's against a Duran ov 74/78, so many tried & failed, Edwin Viruit being the only survivor with his run/hug/run tactics but in the main he allways found a way 2 get 2 them late on especially over 15.
