I've just read the article entitled 'The Genius of Bob Fitzsimmons' by Tracy Callis who if I'm not mistaken is very highly regarded as a boxing historian/writer. In the article I was surprised to find that at MW Bob Fitzsimmons would win in a fight against Ray Robinson at H2H and is also better P4P. I'm not very knowledgeable on Fitz but what do people think of this? Could he really take this MW bout, if it were to happen?

possible. bob hit hard as ****. at middleweight i dont really see a lot of people withstanding his punches. who knows. he could land a bomb and ktfo him i guess, but then again robinson had a pretty damn good chin and he could bomb himself, so i honestly dunno. this fight would look weird.

Another impossible to analyze cross-era matchup.

i would bet the house that fitz couldn't beat robinson. fitz was great for his time but robinson would destroy him.

I hope you get some decent odds to make that bet worthwhile.

Fitz must start the favourite head to head. Even if he had no skill whatsoever (which is as far from the truth as one could imagine), his sheer power gives him a punchers chance. Sugar Ray is one of the all time greats. At Welterweight their is even a very good chance that he is the greatest ever, but head to head, he starts a big underdog against Bob Fitzsimmons.

This outcome may have nothing to do with Ray's chin. It's documented on film what a massive body puncher Fitz was. He beat Gardner over 20 rounds when he was PAST 40! Frank Allen tried blocking Fitz's hook with his wrist, which got fractured as a result. Bob knocked out opponents by hitting them on the forehead and other body parts not typically vulnerable.

Not really a fair fight, even for Robby. At some point, Ray would get hit. He would discover that Fitz's power was in a whole other league than that of Levine and Graziano. Robinson drew the line at Moore and the heavyweights. Ruby Robert was certainly a puncher in a class above that line Ray didn't cross.

robinson's skill level was light years ahead of fitz. i love watching old fights and studying old fighters as much as the rest of you but i have to call bullsh!t when i see it.

Not questioning his skill level, just whether or not he can avoid getting hit entirely, especially to the body. That shot Fitz knocked Corbett out with might have broken through Robby's spine. Ray never took on a puncher of that caliber in all his 200 professional outings.

Rob may arguably be the best p4p fighter of all-time, but there's no way he survives this one. I'm almost tempted to match Ray with Tyson instead.

Actually the reverse Burt ... Fitz had super heavyweight power, great strength, terrific stamina and an incredibility to take punishment and re-coop like lightning ...

Ray could not dent Maxim, he was not doing it to Fitz ... in modern rules Ray might outpoint him but Fitz could also stop him ... who knows ?

Fitzimmons won by ko last time we did this on here, by majority poster vote. I disagree. Robinson could definitely taste the canvas though. Hell, i even can say that i see where people are coming from when they said that Fitzimmons would win by stoppage, but it's all from the point of view of how good Fitzimmons was and what his ability was, so i understand that aspect of the argument. When you actually consider the full impact of the fact that the opponent is Robinson, well it just leads me to think that it doesn't happen. Robinson feels the power but still wins imo.

Although he was never stopped by punches in 200 fights, and possessed tremendous recuperative powers, there was a ceiling on how hard the opponents he fought hit. He never took on Moore, Lausse or Burley. Graziano, Levine, Giardello, Basilio, Fullmer, Olson, Turpin and LaMotta were respectable punchers, but compared to Fitz? Robby laughed when Curt Gowdy asked him if he would have gone after the heavyweight title following a win over Maxim. He and LaMotta briefly mentioned Satterfield in the context of heavy hitters to be dealt with in that situation. (Yes, Jake knocked Satterfield out, but that was when Bob was younger, and around 15 to 20 pounds lighter than at his peak.) Robby had better be doing his version of Pep when dealing with Fitz, staying the hell away, or backing him up him from long range, like Corbett did when he was winning. (Ray didn't have Corbett's power though.)
