True, but this may have something to do with the fact that Hagler kept destroying Duff's fighters (Mugabi, Kevin Finnegan, etc).

When you live with your boy in the gym and before your very eyes watch him become a caged tiger ready to devour the entire world, only to have a Marvin Hagler come along, take everything your tiger has and then shut him completely down well....that has to have considerable impact on the way you view things.

Maybe if Duff had watched Ray Robinson tear up a couple of his proteges as Hagler did then he'd have a different POV.

BTW...just for the record, I don't disagree with Duff regarding the outcome of this fight. I am of the belief that Hags could very well have beaten SRR at 160. Ray had a hard time with almost every middleweight he ever faced, great or merely good. Yes, even in his prime.

Right I'll get down to business.

I think Hagler is superb at taking away an orthodox opponents left jab with his parry and head movement, and using it to get inside with his own ram rod right jab. I'd favour Hagler to be in his pressure fighter role in this bout, stalking Robinson and winning the battle of jabs, then stepping inside with some fluid combinations.

However, Robinson was at times superb with dispensing of his jab and landing hard counter punches in its place. I could see Hagler coming forward anticipating a jab but copping some hard right hands or left hooks, which are good shots vs a southpaw. And I can imagine Robinson stepping away at angles well to get away from Hagler after landing.

I think it would then develop into both guys feinting for the other to lead, I'm not entirely sure who would get the best of this though. I would probably favour Ray's better handspeed to let him get off first and nick a close decision.

 

No Hopkins was on fire before and after Jones fought him not losing again for 12years and arguably never lost again (yet)

Robinson beats Hagler in a close 1, the speed and movement are big advantages for Robinson, Hagler's pressure pushing him close but it wouldnt be enough

It is close though, I do love the way Robinson dispenses with the jab and that to me is the main difference. If anyone is decking Hagler IMO, SRR would do it with one of them short left hooks.

 

IMO one of Monzon´s right hands could do the trick too. I won´t expect it though.

 

Monzon before he was shot in the shoulder had a great, strong right hand. I also didn´t have the impression GP was talking about "taking out" but about flooring. I can see Monzon doing that. Nobody takes out Hagler at mw, not even Robinson.

 

I don't think Monzon has the explosiveness to drop Hagler.

 

If anyone would put Hagler down it would be maybe McClellan or maybe Jones with something he doesn't see coming.
