At LW, its not really a fair match up because Ray was too inexperienced for a guy like Duran so early in his career, so the Duran of Palomino/SR Leonard taking on Robinson at WW, who takes it and how? I would have Robinson winning by dec. but Duran was far more aggressively minded than SRR, Ray was always a boxer first, but Duran could turn that off in flashes and just go in for the kill, dont get me wrong, Robinson did that too, but not as much as Duran, as Jack Newfield puts it, Duran had a "jungle intensity" that I dont beleive Robbie matched, Robinson takes it but not with ease, in my opinion Ray would find it harder against Duran than Ray Leonard for example. so who takes this one and at what point in the bout?

I favour Robinson but think this would be a very difficult fight for him, possibly his most difficult at welter.

The 2 areas i'd say robinson is weakest in are his physical strength and inside fighting abilities. In Roberto he has one of the best fighter ever, if not the best ever on the inside and a very strong physical man, even at welterweight. Also roberto was exceptional adept at the transition between being on the outside to getting inside. Footwork was brilliant, he could mix it up, either coming in fast and wild like or by moving quicky with head work movement which was very difficult to find. He was difficult to time as he had many different ways of being able to get inside. His straight right hand as well is quick and accurate and very good shot to land before he moved onto the inside.

I think roberto would have a lot of success early getting in about robinson. Robinson was not one that would shy away from a fight and loved to get in a tear up. However the problem that duran would find in robinson was the power he had in either hand. Much more than Leonard. Robinson would be landing as he came in and after a while i see this taking an effect. I think robinson would seriously hurt duran, and when he had him hurt i could see him finishing duran though i'm not sure i'd favour it. If he hurt duran it could make duran more wary to come in and allow robinson to have more time fighting at mid range where he is deadly, perhaps the most deadly fighter ever at that range.

Also if robinson never did deter duran i think he would be clever enough to change the strategy up. He was able to do so in Gavilan 2 by all accounts and i could see him doing so here if he requires. If duran was winning by taking the fight to the inside. Robinson has the movement, footspeed, power off the backfoot and technical ability to rack up enough rounds to take the fight by UD or SD I'd guess in this mode

Steve's pretty much on point. I'd say a Decision either way, though I tend to narrowly favor Robinson with both at their best.

Robinson's infighting weren't special in any kind of traditional way, but he was so fantastically well balanced and had fighting instincts that were so keen that he, in some ways, bridged that gap. The sneaky body shots he was landing versus LaMotta, probably the most aggressive in-fighter he faced, were the hardest single shots he landed. If you can score inside then seperate yourself impeccably from the action at the time of your choosing you're an expert in-fighter, not a weak one (not that anyone was calling him weak).

Combine this with his superior footwork and his superior punching and the type of back-foot punching that was never equalled before and has never been equalled since and I think it is Duran, not Sugar, who has the trouble.

That is a good post Steve, in many ways, but I think that Robinson would do surprisingly well here based upon the clues we have on film of Sugar versus pressure and his results versus culture.

One clear advantage Robinson had over Leonard was firepower. It would be the difference here, as Ray takes this by TKO in the 14th.

    WHAT!!!

Duran would have an even more disadvantage at MW than at Welter!

Robinson is the best P4P in history, the best Welter ever, IMO! Duran is one of the best of all time, but he would be in there with the best ever!

    Robinson UD!

It would be a fight of classic proportions ! Robinson would squeak it. Even though Duran would be his toughest opponent ever faced,at this point.

  15. sorry, but i do not think that duran would have been even his toughest rival, duran did not great pressure like lamotta and duran did not have the chin of lamotta , i know that lamotta was a mw but i am talking on styles, a welter with the style of lamotta would be a better rival, duran was a legend in the lw, in the welter robinson would destroy him, robinson had better feet work than leonard, much more hitting power, better combinations, great chin, more stamina... no contest. and robinson might destroy duran like hearns did... in the welter or middle... robinson would kill duran
