I'm not sure that would be the case. Without the 1st 5 of their fights on film its difficult to say for sure but the major issue i think robinson had with La Motta was the weight differential. La Motta was an extremely strong middleweight who was able to make his extra ability in strength and weight count in there fights by bulling robinson on the inside.. If La Motta had been a more natural welterweight the weight advantage would not have existed and whilst he would still have been stronger than SRR it would not have been to the same extent.

I think a highly technically skilled inside fighter who was fast on their feet and still strong for a welterweight would cause robinson a lot of issues. Duran was all of these things. Probably not enough to be favoured in a fight but certainly enough to make it an intresting discussion.

  3. i respect your point, but i think that duran might not handle an explosive robinson, duran would show heart but it would be a massacre

Robinson would always beat Duran. More versatile. The fast and great guys Duran fought all beat him Hearns,Benitez,Leonard. and they beat him easily. Why wouldn't Robinson?

This is one we discuss every now and then and i like this discussion, very interesting, and it should be. There's no need to say the Duran of such and such fight imo, 'welterweight Duran' is fine, he was consistent enough at the weight for us to associate a general 147 Duran as a tremendous operator. Anyway, my opinion is the same as ever, I'm less optimistic of Duran's chances than the majority usually. I just ca't see Duran taking him. For me, as good a win as it was for Leonard in the rematch, i just still don't think that the 'running' style is the best advised way of fighting Duran, I just don't. Duran employed unconventional method's of cutting the rind down, which were basically either closing the distance fast, or smashing his opponent with one of the most accurate and spiteful right crosses ever seen followed body shots and head shots from all angles. For me the best way to fight him is still the Dejesus way, creating a bit of room for authoritative hooks and combos inside and at mid-range, and boxing in centre ring accordingly, using footwork etc and gaining Duran's respect. Of course it's a ridiculous task for most, but i still think it's the best way against a prime Duran. It's Robinson's bread and butter.

running from Duran would not work, but giving him angles and punching with technique worked against him, if the guy had decent speed. See Leonard Nov. 1980 and Benitez Jan. 1982.

Can I ask what your opinion on a prime lightweight Duran is MAG? I understand that at welter and above you believe that anyone with some speed beats him.

He was dominant at lightweight, but he fought lesser guys. I think fast guy like Pacman at 135 who is comfortable at the weight would outbox Duran, and I think Arguello would be tougher for Duran than most people think, although Alexis would not give him enough angles.
