He was really vulnerable to in-fighting. Marty Servo, Sammy Angott, Jake LaMotta, Jackie Wilson all showed he wasn't very good when an opponent could get past his jab and do some work on his body. What other examples of this weakness of his do you recall, from fight reports you read on him or saw on film?
I've heard he beat the crap out of them. Beat the **** out of his wife, when she was pregnant too. He was a nasty ****er in that regard, him and LaMotta.
This would be it. Sugar Ray lacked the size ( he was natural welter ) to in-fight vs bigger and stronger middles. It should be noted that Sugar Ray could in-fight though. He had a great short hook, fast hands, and a body attack. Although it is hardly ever mentioned, Sugar Ray did not fight many black fighters as champion, and lost to one good one in his prime.
Marty Servo, Sammy Angott and Jackie Wilson all started below 130lb, they weren't bigger than Ray, so it's not the case of them imposing their strength of him. Ray was in his prime at the time too, and was making 147 lb limit without any problem.
Oh, and before somebody calls me a hater or something, that's not my personal opinion I'm expressing, that was the opinion of AP, UPI and NYT authors at the time.
Obviously, I can only go by what was contemporary opinion, as I cannot see any of above fights myself (and 6th LaMotta's can be written off by many as Robinson being past his prime and not at his best weight).
Robinson basically started off as a lightweight himself. He was very durable(not what I think, his record bears this out) but not physically strong...Ray does look to be hittable at times...granted. But if everyone found Robinson so easy (hittable) in the ring, how would he have lasted 25 years? That just does not add up... I haven't read anything re the Servo fights except boxrec, from what I understand Robinson took two decisions...One not very popular with the crowd. I've seen a short clip of his third with Angott, (who looks good on film) it seemed Robinson wanted him to come inside, so that both would initate exchanges...Angott was dancing away later in the fight...due to Robinson's power.
From the reports I read Robinson was at his best when he could keep an opponent at the end of his jab, and used long rights to the jaw to do damage. When an opponent could get past the jab and work the body, he only clinched and didn't fight back much, and he often got tired toward later rounds because of opponent's work on his body.
Senya13 No dispespect. But it seems as though you are just 'nit-picking' at SRR. Looking at the overall picture, I'd say that he did pretty well for himself in the ring. Basically, what is your point???
I agree with this, Robinson's weakness has more to do with style if any thing. The styles of Fullmer, LaMotta, and Carman seem to give Robinson the MOST problems. Even Turpin did it to a level.
Along with body punches, Ray struggled with rabbit punches too. I'd say Fullmer landed near a 1000 of them in their tetralogy.
Well Fullmer was the dirty out of the pair, when the Robinson Carman fights get there, you will see a LOT less rabbit punching on the part of Carman. the first fight was close, I have not score it, the rematch was close also.
