Ray was a balding, looking old before his time, awkward fighter who fought most of the time as a light heavyweight. He was an enjoyable to watch, definitely had some skills and he even threw some behind the back punches. Windmill White was one of boxing's true characters.
Also around his time we had a slew of colourful and decent LHWs. Hal " TNT " Carroll Jimmy " the Cat " Dupree Ray " the runner " Anderson Frankie De Paula Andy Kendal Tommy Hicks Vicente Rondon Tom Bogs Yaqui Lopez Len Hutchins Richie Kates Bobby Cassidy Eddie " red top " Owens and prob some I have forgotten..... stay safe guys.
Ray was one of my favs back in the day. Shared the ring with Jimmy Dupree, Mike Quarry, Jesse Burnett, Roger Rouse and Lonnie Bennett among others. Could box a bit but was known for his antics and his assortment of crazy punches such as his Rooster punch, the double-uppercut whammy, the kangaroo punch and of course - as has been mentioned - his behind the back punch. A buddy of mine was present at the Main St. gym when White sparred with jerry Quarry. Ray took a few liberties with Jerry with the behind-the-back punch being the catalyst and Jerry saw red. He left Ray in a heap with broken ribs after that incident. But man, my Dad and I used to love watching the Windmill.
