I was recently watching the build up video to Tyson Vs Ruddock In the video Ruddock claims he is going to beat Tyson etc etc and says remember Tyson has been KO'd by lesser fighters (Douglas), so from here we can tell what Ruddock thinks of Buster Douglas. Who would win out of these 2 and was Douglas really a lesser fighter than Ruddock? I dont mind which versions you pick whether its Prime For Prime or around the 1990-1 era, lets say Douglas wins the titles and then decided to put them on the line against Ruddock. (Cant seem to find the video anywhere now) Your Picks? Interesting Fact: Ruddock beat Lennox Lewis in the amateurs (Wiki) Video not related but funny [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOgr2dppDCY[/ame] http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2222713/mike_tyson_vs_donovan_razor_ruddock_ii_some_pre_fight_talk/
The consensus view of Douglas was that he wasn't that great. He helped reinforce the thought his win over Tyson was a fluke by quitting against Holyfield, just as he did against Tucker. I could see Douglas calling it a night as soon as he gets hit on the chin. Douglas was the better fighter but Ruddock was mentally tougher.
I think the Douglas footwork comes into play here and Buster turns him all night. And Ruddock was not a guy that fought smart in the ring and I think he eats jabs and tries that wide hook of his from way on the outside without setting it up and misses. If Ruddock would give a full 3 minutes per round of effort he could get the guy out of there but I think he has to take too many breathers and does his fight for about 25 seconds a round thing.
I would favor Ruddock here, its the mental toughness, Ruddock could take Busters best in my eyes but I am not sure Douglas would be able to withstand a long hard fight against the Razor which is what this would be. I think Douglas has the better jab and right hand but he would eat enough Ruddock hooks and be hurt somewhere and thats when Ruddock would move in for the finish. Ruddock can match Douglas in size and strength he wouldn't be able to dominate Razor from the outside like he did the much smaller Tyson.. Ruddock is also a big man!!
Well said lefthook. :good The '89 Ruddock would most definitely have the footwork to catch Tokyo Douglas. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFb13F5K8Pw[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6PTVsCo3g8&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRWOHzXWleg&feature=related[/ame]
No, Douglas wasn't a "lesser fighter" than Ruddock, just less explosive, a lesser puncher maybe. He was a better boxer though.
I wonder if Douglas had thrown the belt in the garbage rather than fight Holyfield - would it be presumed that he would of beat Holyfield anyway? Or do only certain fighters het free passes like that?
Some other guy did that once, hes been called a coward for the rest of his career I think reckon could have ended Douglas pretty early, Tyson had Douglas down, Razor wouldnt have the same problems as Tyson did i.e being the smaller man. Would have been an interesting fight, just like my other thread Tua vs Frazier
Ruddock gets overrated, because he got hyped up for scoring some big KOs over a couple of has-beens. If we're going to accept that Ruddock was finished or softened up by the Tyson fights, you also have to reckon that Dokes and Smith were suitably past their bests when Ruddock beat them. I mean, who else did Ruddock beat ? He stick-and-move to beat Weaver back in '86 but changed his style after that, still a good win, and Weaver was past his best too. Douglas beat a near-prime Tyson, no excuses. He also outboxed a past-it Berbick, a young dangerous McCall, a so-so up-and-down Greg Page (who was beginning on a permanent down, admittedly), and destroyed touted prospect Mike Williams (who had just gone distance with Witherspoon). Douglas outboxed those guys quite clearly. So I don't think anyone can argue Ruddock was a better class of fighter at all. The only difference is he was a bigger puncher, Douglas the better technical boxer.
Douglas KTFO 100% Prime/BEST Tyson - IMO Tokyo-Douglas KTFO any Tyson cos he were only 24 so he was still at his v.Best. :deal ppl use gay excuses - BUT did they every think it were Douglas who made tyson look past-Prime - not what trainer he hapened to have???
Whats Foremans excuse when Ali handed him his ass in Kinshasa, Zaire? DOuglas beat an overconfident, undertrained Tyson who had been banging Japanese broads until 4 in the morning. It was a fluke win, as Douglas proved to get KTFO in his very next fight Douglas had the night of life against a poor unmotivated undertrained Tyson
