Does anyone really think Ruddock would've beat Holyfield if he'd have got those fights back then in that tournament? Or anyone think he beats Bowe? He'd get countered to death by Evander over 12 rounds and Bowe would outland him about 5 or 6 to 1. Now maybe he could catch an unmotivated Douglas, but I'm not sure about that and think if buster uses his legs the whole fight, he'd score the points. There were some other guys I wanted to see Razor in there against as well, but he really never faced many elite guys at their top form. I wanted to see him and Mercer go at it and I thought an old Witherspoon was a dangerous guy as well.
So the Bruno & Douglas fights didn't already show you that more so? :huh At least Tyson was using crippling bodypunching & dynamite straights against Ruddock.
I agree. I don't think he would have beat Holyfield or Bowe. I think they were a lot better than him. Ruddock's best win by far is the KO over Dokes. It was a great KO, but at the top level you can't bank on KOing every opponent with one punch. Ruddock didn't seem to get that.
Yes. Well, especially Douglas, but that's why I said "confirmed". In other words, it was something he hadn't corrected.
Yep. But so many people bought into that Dokes result for some reason. So devastating, I guess. By that point in time, Dokes was new icing on 2 week old cake though. I guess not many people were watching the fights with Pritchard and Washington and those caliber fighters. They were thinking it was the guy from 81 fighting John Gardner, not a guy 10 years later with another 450,000 miles on the odometer.
I think if Holyfield fought recklessly like he did against Cooper, Foreman, Stewart and Dokes around this time, Ruddock could possibly hurt him badly, moreso than he had been before. Ruddock really did have that kind of power in ONE shot, but, I dont think he had the kind of finishing skills needed to beat Holyfield. I know one thing, Holyfield and his people did not want to fight him. Duva and Co. knew it was not a good fight for Holyfield.
Thanks for posting this. For my money Page was the most talented of the" Lost Generation" of heavyweights that DK f****d up.He should have boxed more form the outside in this fight but it was an entertaining brawl. You can see why Floyd gave up on Razor ,the guy was deaf to advice.
As I said in another post, punchers fall in love with their power, and Page was so open and slow that Ruddock was just trying to take his head off without setting his power up.
This is exactly how I've always felt. Why didn't Holyfield face Ruddock when Razor was thought of so highly at the time. Maybe Holy and Duva didn't favor dealing with King?
I think it was boxing politics. Don King and the WBC tried to push them in to fighting Ruddock, but they wanted to fight Bowe. Jose Sulaiman was trying his hardest to get the titles back in King's hands.
Page was never the same after the loss to Tubbs, if he had got out of boxing after this fight, he'd still be alive today.
Ruddock was no defensive wizard..... Ruddock was seriously flawed, too.... His skills were being overrated by his team.... Ruddock's right hand----SUCKED! All he really had was an occasional left jab and a whole lotta' smashes from his left.... Most converted southpaws have lousy rights.... Add Ruddock to the list there.... I never thought "Cooney" or "Hill" had good rights, either..... DLH's right hand was good.... But, again, his hook was his weapon of choice.... MR.BILL
