The reason Ruddock fought Tyson was because Holyfield would not give him title shot and was well publicized at the time. They are not my heroes please do not take things out of content.
Cute but none of this ever happened and you have no proof of this happening. We do have proof of Tyson beating Ruddock. David Jaco beating Ruddock. Lewis and Morrison beating Ruddock and Tyson getting his butt whipped by Holyfield.
Hagler said the hardest he was hit was Tony Sibson even though he destroyed him. Tyson was not prepared properly for Douglas and was already past his prime when fighting Holyfield and Lewis. So why wouldn't he say Razor hit him the hardest. Razor knocked out Dokes and he was out for 12 mins !!
Yes Jaco did ko Razor but it was discovered after the fight Razor had suffered from a rare respiratory illness and doctors feared his career was over. As stated before Razor was ruined by Tyson two fights was past his prime when fighting Morrison and Lewis and the one who Holyfield avoided was prime Razor after ko Dokes.
Ruddock when he fought Tyson had gone power mad not using a jab or much foot work just his smash thing Brunos jab could be the difference in this fight setting up Ruddock for big right hands. frank was more disciplined than razor and would follow instructions from his corner Ruddock was wilder and just fought.both had huge one shot power so it boils down to who drops the bomb first.
Was there 2 different Ruddocks? I remember reading previews of the scheduled title defence by Tyson against Ruddock that was supposed to happen in 1989 before it was a called off and Tyson subsequently went on to lose to Douglas. In those previews, it said something along the lines of Razor was a good boxer with a good jab and this was essential if he was to hold off Tyson and also to follow it up with a strong right. No mention of any left hooks yet when they did meet a couple of years later in 91, Razor was described basically as all left hook/uppercut and literally nothing else.
ruddock did not have tyson ready to go come on guys. watch the fights again. He was feeling those shots at certain points in their 2 fights but someone ready to go doesnt dare his opponent to hit him again, let him do it and fire back
Lennox Lewis said in a recent best I fought addition of the Ring that Shannon Briggs was the hardest puncher he ever fought and we of course know he was knocked out by Rahman and stopped by McCall. Holyfield said Foreman was the hardest puncher he ever faced. Holmes was knocked out by Tyson but said Shavers hit harder. Being knocked out doesn't always mean the loser crowns you the hardest puncher they've ever faced. Ruddock shook Tyson more than Bruno. People always talk about round 6 of fight #1 but Razor landed some huge shots in the 2nd fight as well. Round 3 was a great round for Ruddock in fight #2. Look for the smash to land flush and slice right through Tyson early in that round.. As for this dream fight Razor I think stops Bruno around the 7th but he'll be behind on points and he'll have been taking a pounding from Bruno's Jab and he may have to climb off the canvas to win. It'll be Bruno early but Razor will get him eventually!!
Excellent post. Ruddock and Bruno were polar opposites. Ruddock was a flamboyantly physically talented fighter who underused or neglected his gifts.he was very relaxed in the ring and in the words of that blowhard ferdie pacheco " must have held the record for most knockdowns suffered with a smile".ruddock was very much two fighters...the guy who first came to prominence in 1986 with a victory over mike weaver and who had looked brilliant sparring larry holmes in fact outjabbing holmes in a training camp before spinks-holmes 2..... was a fleet footed guy who moved a lot for a hw,used his jab quite well, had a decent right hand and decent stamina...all this was true right up to 1989 and his victory over bonecrusher...the jaco blip u can ignore he had an asthma attack...i would argue the 1989 ruddock was the best version as he had the attributes i listed above but also by now had developed his series of left hook/uppercuts known collectively as the smash.during the tyson fights in 1991 he started to overrely on the smash and post those fights he became a flat footed brawler neglecting his skills and discipline...i have no doubt the superior version of 1989 Ruddock would have defeated tokyo tyson by a stoppage Bruno was a very determined guy who built his body up with weights but apart from very good power had slow hands and feet ,his eyesight wasnt great, and altho chuvaloesque he could take an incredible amount of punches and not fall down or before falling down the problem was he would usually freeze the first time a big punch landed and became a stationary punchbag and the fight was over....so its a thing good bruno had a fairly tight defence and was hard to catch generally. Ruddock on the other hand, especially when he became smash happy, totally neglected defence...he would frequently go down usually smiling and not hurt and would fight back well (tyson, smith, morrison fights)..... Power wise my first instinct was wtf it has to be ruddock who hits harder...i mean brunos main bomb out was gerrie coetzee...ruddock knocked out bonecrusher smith who bruno couldnt dent...michael dokes......ruddock hurt Tyson a few times with a cluster of shots...but here is the point ...altho the referee and very poor camera angle blocked it bruno wobbled tyson with one punch... a secondary one from his favoured arsenal... the left hook...in a nutshell i think an earlier poster said it best ...bruno had more power in his hands but other things (considerably slower hands and feet than ruddock) stopped him scoring as spectacular knockouts as ruddock........bruno was best during 87-91...he knocked out/tko"d joe bugner, james tillis, carl williams and jose ribalta in that period ...good little series of wins. As for a fight i think the best version of ruddock (1989) beats any version of bruno...the 1991 version too knocks out Bruno ....the distracted shot fighter 1992 onwards i could see a peak bruno stopping
