I always appreciate hearing the details of Olympic/amateur boxing on here. I genuinely know next to nothing about amateur boxing and it's refreshing to listen to people who know what they're talking about. Kudos.
I follow amateur boxing equally as i follow pro boxing, and i follow both of them really closely Lol.
I'm no expert on any of their careers and I don't want to try and come across like I think I am. I've probably seen about 8 of Gaydarbekov's fights, about the same of Artayev's, about 4 or 5 of Simion's, and a couple of Austin's. I saw many of them live on TV during the respective Olympic games they fought in so it was many years ago. But all those guys impressed me and they were all really good. I mean you only have to look at their CVs to see who they beat and what they achieved to know that. As for how they would've fared as pros had they turned over? Some of them would've gone onto have great pro careers IMO, and some may have failed to do so well like Korobov for instance. But there have been loads of excellent amateur fighters from former Soviet states and Cuba who never turned pro though.
Yes his run during those world championships was great. Korobov went on an amazing run of form for a number of years and Artayev looked fearsome down at welter when he won his Olympic gold in 2004.
Hard to say. Like I said it was a long time ago when I saw those fights of his at welter (although I saw him more recently when he fought up at MW in the 2008 Olympics against Korobov and DeGale) but I just remember being impressed by him at the time and thinking he looked a real force. I don't see why he wouldn't have done well in the pros though. His countrymen Sapiyev and Sarsekbayev who also won Olympic gold at welter impressed the hell out of me too.
Thanks Serge. You've dropped some serious knowledge in this thread and really impressed me, too. You're easily one of the better posters on this forum! ;-) I always find the elite amateurs fascinating. They constantly face the best year in year out (even weekly, really), when they go on a legendary run they claim some seriously talented scalps, and I've always felt that they are better than their pro equivalent. I'd love a format where the top amateurs & pros face each other to really see who the best in the world is. Thanks one again, Serge!
Very informative some great info in this thread I appreciate it Interesting to hear the paths crossed and the records held I never knew Perez foughtggg that's a new one thanks Serge really as impressed in this thread once again thanks
No problem. Thanks for the kind words, you're a good poster too. Same here, and for the exact same reasons you outlined. In some ways I prefer amateur boxing to pro boxing and I could consist on a diet of solely amateur boxing if pro boxing was ever banned - just as long it was on TV regularly, like every week, and they were international tournaments featuring the world's best. That said, I don't really watch much amateur boxing these days. I'll watch the big tournaments like the Olympics, WAC, Europeans and they occasional WSB fight but that's about it really. And even then I'll only watch certain fights or fights of certain fighters. I watch a lot less pro boxing than I use to as well. Yeah that would be great. I'd love to see that too. Merry xmas
Korobov is 27-1 and was beating the hell out of the guy who stopped him. Not bad for an underachiever.
