Try telling them that. If every fighter could be trusted to not "boil down" then that would be perfect. Unfortunately, it would never happen and it is naive of anyone to think that it could.

lol I guess I am that idiot then. By the way, there is an article by Nigel Collins which agrees with me. I guess he is an idiot also. Google " are same day weighins unhealthy", read the first citation and learn.

I dont have to learn, I actually participate in the sport and I know all about weigh ins, same day (amateur) and ones that take place the day before (professional) and there is a huge difference, believe me. And if you had boxed you would know the difference. Who gives a **** what Nigel Collins says? Hes the same bloke that claimed Big Daddy Bowe never ducked anyone. Hes just a writer/broadcaster ffs, what scientific credentials does he possess? Thats right, none. He never had to make weight for a fight once. You found one article that possibly agrees with you and ignored all the evidence which contradicts your opinion. I'll grant you that in a perfect world, no professional boxer would "boil down" and if you can convince me that you have a system to ensure that they refrain from doing so I shall salute you. But you cant.

Collins isn't the only one in the article. The Nevada doctor who was influential in the institution of one day weighins now says it was a mistake. Why don't you read the article? What are you afraid of? That someone respected might have a different opinion than you? It seems you think you know it all but you don't. If you open your mind to different opinions you might learn something.

You obviously didnt bother to read my post, did you? I dont need to learn sonething that I have already experienced numerous times. I clearly know more than you, since I've experienced pro weigh-ins five times and had over 60 amateur bouts!!! Like I said, if you can persuade me that you have a system to ensure that every professional fighter refrains from "boiling down" and thus all fight at a rehydrated weight, then im all for it. And im all for learning, just not from people who clearly have never experienced both standards of weigh ins. If you cannot comprehend that, then fair enough.

You are not the only one on here that has had boxing experience. I fought in the Michigan golden gloves and had a couple of amateur bouts when I was in the military. The article, which you refuse to read for some reason, goes into your concerns. However, I am not going to pursue this any further with you because I don't want you stalking me like you did to SmokinJoe. Cheers!

 The SmokinJoe reference was funny... And we actually get on well now. And I appreciate that you have an amateur pedigree (and your military service is worthy of praise) but you never weighed in as a pro. If you had you would appreciate the significant difference between the two weigh in policies. Im not trying to be a kn ob, its just the difference is huge. Just think how you would have felt if you were compelled to weigh in on the same day as your bout, but your opponent was allowed to weigh in the day before. I have made a note of the article and I will give it a look at some point. But even if it states that there is no additional risk to health with same day weigh ins it will surely have to address the health risks that extreme dehydration can cause, especially where trauma is involved. As I said, in theory your idea is great and I would be all for it. But in reality hardly anyone would fight at a rehydrated weight and as such the same well documented risks would be present.

Thanks for coming back at me in a civil manner. I think the idea of a same day weighin is that both fighters weighin the day of the fight. The article also said that the NCAA did away with day before weighins for wrestling for health reasons. People are going to try to game the system whatever the rules are. The authorities in the Collins article felt that, with all things considered, same day weighins were better. The article said that one reason that the commissions haven't gone back to same day weighins is that they are making a lot of money on the day before weighin ceremonies. You disagree and I am fine with that.

OK but the reality is that in competitive sports, athletes will do everything they can to give themselves a competitive edge, even if it might mean risking their health. Especially when millions of dollars are at stake

As I said above, people will try to game the system whatever the rules are. The Doctor that was instrumental in instituting the day before weighin now feels that it was a big mistake. I take him at his word.

Hey, it is always a pleasure to debate an issue with someone intelligent and reasonable. And even though I do disagree with you I enjoyed reading your posts and you made a great case. So much so im going to read that article. Not because I expect it to change my mind (though it may well do. One has to try and keep an open mind) but because you recommend that I consult it. Best wishes cslb. And thank you.

It's not just about gaming the system.

How many times do you think it's happened where some broke club fighter has been offered a once-in-a-lifetime payday to take the place of a drop-out to fight on an ESPN card, and almost killed himself to make weight in order to feed his kids?

I would rather that guy enter the ring 15lbs over the official limit, than enter it dangerously dehydrated and get battered to death

Ive just reread my posts and realised that in my haste to reply I made a complete bal ls up.. I apologise for my error. What I meant (regarding you weighing in on the same day and your opponent the day before) was you may well have felt much stronger if you weighed in the day before, as opposed to the same day. The an alogy I used was bloody terrible to be honest. And when I read it back it had ME stratching my head (and suitably embarrassed). Anyway, catch you in another thread cslb.
