Round 4: 10-9 Hopkins. Very close round here. Thought Hopkins nicked it by landing the cleaner of what little pucnhes each landed. Hopkins got off on the inside more, and started to time that wild overhand right by Taylor, landed 2 clena counters from what I saw. But really could have gone either way. . . 10-9 Hopkins; 39-37 Taylor.
Round 5 - The intensity has cranked up a notch as Hopkins has decided to fight Taylor for offensive initiative. Bernard starts to use his own jab and uses it to set up a great left hook before moving away. Hopkins now smothering Taylor, preventing the contender from jabbing. As they come together Hopkins leads with his head, 'accidentally' cutting the top of Taylor's head. Taylor paws with his left before pushing Hopkins into the ropes and throwing a huge right which just misses! Hopkins lands a short left hook before holding again, limiting Taylor's chances to be physical. Big right hand inside by Hopkins, who is controlling this round since the headbutt. Hopkins lands another short left hook and seems far more relaxed now as evidenced by him coming forward and landing a right hand lead. Taylor lands a big left hook and narrowly misses a left hand as they exchange for the final few seconds, thrilling the crowd. 10 - 9 Hopkins 48 - 47 for Taylor
Round 5: 10-9 Hopkins. Damn, another close round that could have gone either way. Headbutt from Hopkins opens up small cut on top of Taylor's forehead. But once again, felt Hopkins landed the cleaner shots. Landed that lead right right on the button twice. Got him with a nice counter left hook upstairs while Taylor was shoe-shining. Hopkins just seemed like the ring general, who dictated the pace in this round. 10-9 HOpkins; 48-47 Taylor.
Round 6 - Hopkins begins by moving as Taylor seeks to re-take offensive control with the crowd once again chanting his name. 'Nard on his toes now, beautiful footwork but no punches. Taylor lands a good jab as Hopkins throws a right hand off balance. Taylor has dispensed with his jab, thus ceasing to dictate the pace. Saying that, the younger man does land one solid left jab as Hopkins comes in. Taylor then throws hard to the body and pauses to admire his work, getting cracked with a right hand for his trouble. Hopkins lands a big right hand in the final ten seconds, and getting close enough to Taylor to nullify his flurry to the body. 10 - 10 Taylor landed more punches, where as Hopkins landed two solid right hands. Quality vs quantity results in a drawn round. 58 - 57 for Taylor
Round 6: 10-9 Taylor. Double jab flicked out from Taylor lands as Hopkins tries to come inside from an angle. Taylor with a jab, Hopkins comes back with a 1-2 counter, missing barely. Double jab from Taylor pushes Hopkins back. Oh nice clean jab from Taylor as they exchange jabs. Nice 1-2-3-4 upstairs, and downstairs by Taylor. Hopkins gets him with a straight right hand. Nice clean jab from Hopkins, then Taylor. . Taylor with a 1-2! Taylor with a shoe shine to thte body! Taylor took this round with activity, clean jabs, and ring generalship. Contrary to the last round, Taylor seemed to dictate this round. 10-9 Taylor; 58-56 Taylor.
Round 7 - Taylor begins with a greater purpose, throwing a wider range on punches and just clipping Hopkins. The veteran responds with a big right onto the jaw of Taylor who takes it well. A missed right from Nard allows Taylor to land a body shot and two solid jabs, good work there. Hopkins holds and punches, seeking to wear Taylor out. The crowd boos as Nady again intervenes. Nice short left from Taylor as Hopkins dips low, which is the last action for 40 seconds as Hopkins moves and Taylor refuses to commit to an attack. 10 - 9 Hopkins Poor round which was won by one solid right from Hopkins. 67 - 67
Round 7: 10-9 Taylor. Double jab from Taylor, backing Hopkn s up. Hopkins patient agai, looking for an opening. . . Oh nice lead right from Hopkins, as the steps around, and circles out from Taylor's counter fire. Another lead right from Hopkins missed, as Taylor counters with left uppercut to the liver. Double jab from Taylor lands. 1-2 from Taylor over hte top, Hopkins ties up. Hopkins working on the inside with hi, but nothing big. Hopkins weaves out form under a double jab from Taylor. . . Double jab form Taylor, landing jab landed from Taylor. Hopkins jabs, Taylor answers with a double jab. . . Fairly close round, but felt Taylor took it again cause Hopkins just didn't do enough. He got one clean straight right. . . 10-9 Taylor; 68-65 Taylor.
I thought you of all people would appreciate the futilty of scoring rounds even nowadays.It's generally accepted that judges are discouraged from doing it nowadays although I read a book a few weeks ago where one of the bodies ordered judges to score any even round for the champ back in the 80's or 90's.(think WBO or IBF,but I'll have to check)
Round 8 - Cagey opening, both fighters defending well. More boos as we have very little contact during the first minute of the round. Taylor misses badly as Hopkins jumps in and lands a body shot or two, followed by a jab. Solid left hook by Hopkins, his shorter punch beat Taylor's wide one to the mark. Taylor lands a few body shots as they scrap on the inside. Taylor throws a few jabs as the round comes to a close. The crowd boos. 10 - 9 Taylor More active. 77 - 76 for Taylor.
Round 8: 10-9 Hopkins. Taylor starts off with a jab, and follows it up with a right hook, grazing, but not landing cleanly. Hopkins comes in with a 1-2, but misses. Hopkins lands a clean jab, as Taylor misses with an uppercut. Taylor backs Hopkins up with a right hand. . Taylor gets wild, slips, and Hopkins pounces, landing a right-left. Trade jabs. . Hopkins circles, and resets. . . Hopkins jumps in with a jab. taylor leads with a left hook, but hopkins counters with his own left hook, landing much cleaner. Double jab from Taylor. Hopkins leads with a traight right, Taylor comes back with a 3-4 to the body. Hopkins doinh his patented holdin,, and hitting. . 10-9 Hopkins; 77-75 Taylor.
Round 9 - Another scrappy opening minute. Taylor has slowed down enough to allow Hopkins to spoil and fight a scrappy fight. Taylor lands a solid jab and clips Hopkins with a decent right hand. Hopkins lands a small right hook inside as the two wrestle. Nady still throwing warnings about with no further action. Hopkins lands his own jab twice, before a solid right hand counter. They exchange left hands to close out the round. 10 - 9 Hopkins Hopkins won the round on the inside. 86 - 86
