But I must say I'm glad I rewatched this fight, as I had Taylor winning 115-113 last time. Rounds 4, and 5 were really ****ing close. . Probably gave those to Taylor last time, but I saw Hopkins JUST BARELY NICKING them with the cleaner shots this time. . . This reflects the evolution of my boxing knowledge, as I saw Hopkins do things this time, that I missed last time. . . NOTE: I was JUST getting into the boxing game on a full-time, hardcore basis right around the time this fight took place.
This fight was difficult to score because both fighters didn't take the action. One of the most boring fights in the history of boxing. However, Bernard should have won the fight.
It wasn't as bad as I initially remembered it. . . But yeah, definitely not the best fight in the world. . . And I agree, very hard fight to score. . . You have to appreciate Hopkins' mastery of the game. . I've never seen a boxer make every punch count like he does; save maybe Mayweather, or Wladimir. . .
No way the Harold Kellerman scorecard was right, B'Nard didn't lose all first 6 rounds but he lost the second and that round when Taylor lost his temper for being cut on the head and blood steaming down and came forward in a rush, showinh no respect. From round 7 on it was all B'Nard and closing the show with his man protecting himself and against the ropes. I had 7 rounds to 5 which is a 115-113 for Hop. He won the second fight according to punchstats and Quensberry rules too.
I'm gonn check this out tommorow. Your thread inspired me today & I broke out the tapes. (Watched me some OG ODLH fights & some Martinez scraps) I'm gonna dig this one up. I'll post my card tommorow.
I always felt like Hopkins won both those fights. Poor Taylor - worst reign in middleweight history. Make a case for him losing both hopkins fights, drawing with Winky, losing to Corey Spinks (he really didn't have much effective aggression - I scored that fight for Spinks), looking lackluster against Ouma, and then the only fight he definitively was on his way to winning in that destruction of Kelly Pavlik turned real sour and into a KO loss, though the ref could have stopped that fight because Pavlik looked done early. His most dominant looking fight was spoiled by Kelly knocking him spark out. Then the rematch with Pavlik was pretty close. I really feel bad for Taylor.
I thought Taylor won the first fight or should I say Hopkins gave away too many of the early rounds. That is the facts and trying to reinvent history just doesn't work.
I had BHop winning both. His shots were cleaner most of the time. Lots of rounds are close, but you can pick out the spots Bernard landed flush more often.
I called the first one a draw. Say what you will about JT...He gave Hopkins more trouble than virtually anyone else X faced in the period of time that extended from the start of his middleweight reign through to Calzaghe. And though you could make a case that X maybe the third and fourth based on clean punching and defense, he didn't appear to be in control at all and seemed to be reacting to Taylor a bit in those frames. Bernard did come on later, but was digging out of a pretty deep hole by that point.
