Re-watched Floyd vs Maidana today. 3 thoughts

Good points. I think the only chance maidana has is to use his energy more effectively. Floyd's punch output is very low he doesn't need to ambush him recklessly so early, I think because of that he was a little tired in the second half of the fight. If he can measure his attack a bit better i think he can sustain his aggression all fight and potentially win.

As for your third point, I still think he can beat top ten guys but I think he'd potentially lose against a top guy.

I don't think he has any other gameplan, fighting in the middle of the ring didn't work for him, he has no choice but to bully him to the ropes. I think this time he needs to conserve his energy a bit more and not swing for the fences on every punch like he did last time. As I said before Floyd's output is extremely low, a good sustained attack by maidana could possibly win him the fight depending on the judges.

And I don't think there's anyone to pass the torch too. Manny is on his way out, who's really left? Bradley, Garcia? I think the only person to pass it to is canelo, if he gets better coaching. He could possibly implement the same gameplan that maidana used more effectively because of his size.

Yeah, Floyd won no doubt. Maidana put up a good but losing effort. Agreed that the 2nd fight won't be the same. Floyd should win more clearly this time.

I don't believe that Mayweather ought to retire though. He's still an excellent fighter.

 

Maidana put out a lot of energy in a losing effort but it took just as much energy from Floyd to repel him and here's the clincher, Floyd picked it up a knotch after the fifth. That bears witness to the fact that he was better prepared than Maidana. He threw punches when it was time to throw them not just to throw them and that shows wisdom, not a downhill slide. While it's true that he is getting older, his skills are still very much intact and his stamina is second to none. As long as he maintains that will to win and that fire in his heart, he will stay undeafeated until he retires. He doesn't have **** to prove and only one fight that's a must and that's Pac. After that I would like to see him give Charlo a shot at 154 andn either Thurman or Porter a shot at 147. That would close out his career in style.

 

Maidana is not a "journeyman" as labeled in opening post.

He was the #6 WW at worst heading into their first fight.

I think a counter-punching, defensive style, makes it more likely to have wacky scorecards. Some judges will overrate ineffective aggression against a counter-puncher, some judges will overrate defensive prowess even when that person’s offense isn’t doing much. This was one of those nights where I felt the judges were a bit too generous at looking at the defensive prowess and underrating Maidana’s aggression. Through the first six rounds, I would have undoubtedly wanted to be Chino and not Mayweather, but there are folks who scored those rounds 3-3 or even had Mayweather ahead.

I don’t really think there’s a hometown bias, but judges have their own biases. That’s why I’ve always laughed when people talk about Marquez being “robbed” in fights against Pacquiao where they landed almost identically. Last night I thought Chino pulled it out, but I wouldn’t cry robbery one way or the other.

 

People who are saying that mayweather won the fight act like we have never seen fights before. Yes mayweather has won most of his fights easily but this was one he did not even win.
The problem is that almost everyone had maidana down by 4 points before the fight even started. The guy came in as a huge underdog, fighting the guy in his hometown, in his country, with the judges and refs that favor him and still BEAT THE **** OUT OF HIM.
I have nothing invested in either fighter but we gotta call it as it is,I would like to see mayweather go to Argentina and try to fight the guy over there and let’s see if he wins. Heck, let’s do it in Mexico, you know what forget that, anywhere outside of Vegas where he would not get his way with everything that has to do with a fight as he does in vegas.
And all these people that are not only content with the fact that mayweather got away with a horrible decision win, and would actually argue that it was not even close and they site to prove his win that his connect percentage was so much higher. People stop using stuff that only make you seem like you don’t know squat about boxing. Connect percentage only somewhat matters when both fighters have thrown equal or somewhat close amount of puches. In other words, if you fight someone and you through 10 punches and land 7, guess what 70% wow so high great for you. Now let’s say your opponent had through 50 in that same round and only connected 50%. Poor guy. He still landed 25 punches and guess what in most fights would be the one winning the round (unless you knocked him down in the round)
And that’s why maidana should have been the winner because in 7 out of the first 8 rounds he landed more punches than “TBE” and should have had 6 of those rounds or at least 5 and then 11 and 12 or at least one of them.
