I scored it 8-4 the night of the fight. Haven't watched it since. You guys are missing or intentionally leaving out a key point. Fights are judged in real time. There is no slow mo, reverse angle, fan cam or anything else. Judges score a fight in real time. They make mistakes. A punch didn't actually land, etc. But most agencies had that fight 8-4 wide for Mayweather. That's good enough for me. No way that was a draw. The judge that scored that a draw hasn't judged a fight since
Yeah I’m not sure how accurately translated those quotes are. Like for example, he was asked by Jim Gray “if he felt frustrated”, Canelo didn’t just come out and say he was frustrated. He repeated that he “couldn’t catch Floyd” when being asked about his perceived weight advantage. I think you’re reading too much into the post fight interview, Canelo was simply being “to the point” and respectful of Floyd. Would you rather he claim that he thought he won the fight like Manny Pacquiao did in 2015 after fighting Floyd when the consensus thought Floyd clearly won? I do think that there were rounds that Canelo was truly frustrated by Floyd, but that was only really in one or two of the rounds : Floyd’s best rounds. Lets face it, fighting Floyd Mayweather can be frustrating. And what I take from that interview is that Canelo didn’t do as well as he thought he could do, perhaps he felt that he didn’t land the type of big punches he thought he could have landed, but I think basically the same thing applies to Floyd Mayweather. Floyd wasn’t his usual dominant self, he didn’t dominate Canelo round after round like we’ve seen him dominate other fighters. I think you’re also misinterpreting my position on this fight. I’ve never claimed that I thought Canelo did well enough to win the fight, and I’m still personally trying to generate a fair scorecard. What I’m doing is dispelling the myth that Floyd dominated this fight, schooled Canelo, or anything along those lines. One thing you need to point to is the ridiculous number of successful feints by Canelo. The deck was clearly stacked against Canelo, from the promotion, to name recognition, to the catchweight that Canelo was forced to agree to to make the fight. Given all that, it was no surprise that Floyd got the decision, but when you really examine these rounds, there’s not much in the rounds to separate the fighters. Round 2 is a good example of this, some of the punches it’s truly hard to tell if some of them landed, even on slow-mo replay. If we are still debating whether certain punches landed, then obviously the judges scoring the bout in real-time had to do some guess work when scoring these rounds.
I think it'd be interesting if some other posters can take a look at these two punches. It seems to me that Floyd clearly whiffed with that right hook to the body, you can see Canelo clearly moving backwards to avoid the punch, and the trajectory of Floyd's hooking right hand never had its motion altered or it's speed changed which would indicate that it hit the body. If it would have hit Canelo’s body, I think you’d agree that the right hook would have stopped moving leftward as it hit Canelo’s body, instead the hook continues to the left away from his body as it goes out of view being blocked by Floyd’s back. The punch may have hit Canelo's right glove which was sticking out after it missed. I think the real debatable punch as to whether it landed or not was the punch that followed from Floyd, the straight right that Canelo appeared to have avoided right before the bell. Even you admitted that one Canelo may have taken something off it by moving away, that one I agree is hard to tell and I can’t completely verify that Canelo avoided it, but I also can’t be sure it landed either. But in comparison, the right hook to the body before that, the one that you are saying landed seems to clearly have missed. Likewise, the counter jab by Canelo with 2 minute remaining clearly appears to have landed and with some force, so I’m not sure how you can make that argument. Remember in this round there was also a jab to the body that you stated Floyd landed which I showed clearly missed with the fan cam alternate angle. Can you at least admit you were wrong about that Jab to the body by Floyd? If you were so confident that Floyd jab to the body landed, when the fan cam showed it clearly missed, how can you be so confident about these other punches? That's the key point, and I've stated that you can make an argument that Floyd won the round solely with those 4 clean jabs to the face. Canelo only appeared to have 1 clean jab to the face, the one early in the round, plus the two clean left hooks and the counter jab that impressed me that you said missed. Like I'm really trying to be fair, I understand what you're saying this venturing in to "This punch landed, no it didn't" territory, but to me the only punch that really ventures into that category is the straight right hand by Floyd at the end of the round. Unlike that straight right hand, and the counter uppercut that Canelo may have landed as Floyd was clinching, which I agree both are very inconclusive given only the one camera angle, I truly don't see how you can't clearly see that Floyd's right hook before that whiffed and that the counter jab by Canelo with 2 minutes left in fact landed. I'm not going to press you on these punches further, but I do think those two in particular are clearly visible to anyone whether they landed. The last two punches of the round, however, I agree are in that "hard to tell" category. Hopefully other posters can take a look at these punches. Still I think at the end of the day, keep in mind that the judge that scored it 117-111 to Floyd scored Round 2 for Canelo, so obviously he saw how well Canelo was doing in this round and thought he did enough to win it. I think one thing we've established is that this round was close enough where it would be acceptable to score it to either Canelo or Floyd. Acting like Floyd won Round 2 easily, or dominated the round or anything like that as some have suggested, is preposterous. Round 2, like many of the rounds, could be scored for Canelo. The sooner we realize this the better.
Canelo was 23. Floyd was 36. Just in case you're going where I think you are, if Canelo was "green" than Floyd was old and over the hill.
If you get a chance, start with Round 2 as that round we are still actively debating whether some of these punches landed. Specifically the counter jab by Canelo with exactly 2:00 left in the round, and the final sequence of punches at the end of the round : Floyd throwing a right hook to the body and appearing to whiff, then Floyd throwing a straight right hand that Canelo may have narrowly avoided (hard to tell) and Canelo possibly landing a counter right uppercut to the body as Floyd was trying to clinch. We don't have good angles on some of these punches. I'm willing to go through most of the rounds to this level of detail if need be. FYI I scored the first round to Floyd.
Damn serious... Whether you think the fight was a lopsided win for Mayweather or a close win for Mayweather, one thing cannot be disputed, and that that 23 year old Canelo was very competitive against Mayweather and was very close on a per round basis as Shadow11 is showing with his rd by rd analysis.
^ this is the problem with ignorance. Canelo turned pro at the age of 15. His amateur career consists of 2 years when he was 13 and 14 years old.. After that it was the pros. Compare that to Mayweather who had 40+fights half of those fights against world level fighters and was a decorated amateur fighter. So yes 40+ fights Canelo at 23 was relatively green. You dont even have to understand boxing to see his body has matured into a full grown man as well. Now he is clearly in his prime and when most fighters start carving out their legacy. Between his American debut and the Cotto fight, he was still learning and developing into the fighter is still becoming. Its evident in every fight, hes getting better everytime, most people easily acknowledge that. Canelo is better in every single way now than he was last year, the year before, and the year before. Floyd fought a really good Canelo, but this is a much better Canelo. He probably hasnt even reached his full potential but who knows. Wilder, I compare to GGG, punchers, but no names on their resumes. Golovkin has been holding a MW title much longer though. So if im giving GGG slack for a weak resume, then Wilder deserves the same treatment. Its only morally right.
