Reading the book "Against the odds" BY Larry Holmes- Anyone want me to keep an eye out for anything?

Does he mention the shiner Ali gave him sparring ? They tried to treat it but he said No leave it I want to show the guys back home in Easton the black eye Ali The Greatest gave me. He was proud as could be with that.
Also the stories about Larry & Tex Cobb Tex had us in stitches

 

I remember reading this back in the day- which drug did Larry drop to give him that bad high lol?? Thanks.

 

anything about Tyson besides the usual "I was gonna win with that uppercut"

 

Yea I’d like to know what he says about Tyson too. These two guys were my favourite HWs from way back and I watched their fight in ‘88 with my hands over my eyes…kind of.
In my ideal world, Larry would have nothing but good things to say about Mike as a boxer and as a man. But I’m doubting that for some reason…

 

I got The Ring’s Larry Holmes tribute issue (last year?) and it’s got some really good stories on various facets of Holmes’ career, from his coming up as a sparring partner to Ali and Frazier to his early career on undercards in places like Scranton and working his way up, etc.

Gerry Cooney wrote the foreword and had one really interesting tidbit of the seeds of their friendship that grew out of their fight.

The buildup to that fight, most folks know, had a very ugly racial undercurrent. Cooney was a great white hope and his team and the promotion used that to build up the fight, and it got to both fighters. Neither liked it but neither knew the other one didn’t like it … they were both kind of being sold on the idea that the other fighter was driving it as a Black vs. White thing.

And of course other than press conferences, they weren’t around each other during the build to the fight and didn’t ever have a chance to get to know each other. Being fighters, of course they did mental exercises to motivate themselves and projected whatever they needed to project (subconsciously) to create animosity toward their opponent.

Gerry said his opinion of Larry changed when they came to ring center for prefight instructions from the ref. When they touched gloves, Larry said ‘Let’s have a good fight.’

Not ‘I’m going to beat your ass’ or ‘let’s see what you’ve got chump’ or anything like that, just: ‘Let’s have a good fight.’

Here they were in the spotlight in the biggest heavyweight championship fight of their lives (and one which set records for revenue/PPV buys, etc.) and the last words spoken before the bell were the champion telling the challenger, in so many words, that we’re here to put on a fight for ourselves and these people and let’s bring our best.

Gerry said that moment resonated with him after the fight was over. And later on, when Gerry had some down times fighting his demons and depression and sitting idle rather than fighting on, he said Larry called him a few times to offer encouragement.

That led to a wonderful friendship, honestly one of the best in boxing in our lifetimes, as they started hanging out not just with each other but vacationing together with their wives and going out with their families and such. I’ve seen interviews with both where they say the first thing they do when they accept a charity appearance is call the other, and when they do the former rival always says yes — it’s a 2-for-1 for the charity and helps build the event. They know they can count on each other.

 

After the Holmes-Cobb fight the next morning Larry tapped on Tex's door to ask Tex's wife to " Cut up my eggies & bacon for me my hands are too swollen from beating on Tex" Tex said " Get outta here I'm having to have my breakfast through a straw think yourself lucky". lol

 

Cobb: Next time we fight in a phone booth.

Larry: I’ll give you a call.

 

I never read this book. I hope it was on good content.
