I've noticed in many threads about fighters accused of running. Someone will say "real boxing fans" appreciate that style of fighting.
Whenever that is said someone will ask "What is a real boxing fan"
Well going by what the late great Cus D'Amato believed a real boxer was. I would say a real fan of what Cus D'Amatao describes is a real fan of the sport.
and people who only enjoy rock em Sockem robots standing there swingin like cowboys are only real fans of one aspect of the sport

People who don't like the smothering tactics and the inside fighting are also missing out on something.

True, but that tactic when used correctly is a way of hitting without being hit.
At the end of the day. Just putting your chin out there and slugging until someone falls does not show who's the better athlete in the sport. It only shows who has a better chin and punches harder.

Labeling people as not being "real" boxing fans is a favorite calling card for Mayweather fans after Baldomir type performances.

Truth is, boxing fans can appreciate any style they prefer. Period.

Just because someone doesnt prefer a slick style, it does not mean that they do not know boxing.

What "real boxing fans" don't seem to realize is that "hit" is more important than "don't get hit". I am only impressed with excellent defense when it is coupled with a good offense. IMO opinion boxing is a combat sport and we should be concerned with who is the better fighter not who is the btter athlete. There are 2 ways to prove who is the better fighter.

    1. Render your opponent unable to continue.
    2. Take less damage than your opponent in a round, repeat this step for at least half the rounds plus 1.

Ali vs. Ceveland Williams is my favorite Ali fight by far. Perhaps no heavy beats him on that night.

This "real" boxing fan thing is indeed very silly.

    Boxing is boxing.

    Great points.

One reason I rank a fighters like Pea and SRL higher than Floyd is that they did not sacrifice there offense for their defense. At no time did it seem that they wanted to just make you miss, instead they were there to take you out.

I loved Calzaghes performance this weekend because he went after Kessler, he never rested on his lead.

When a figher rests on his ability to make you miss and does not capitalize on it to mount an offense, he is missing the point of boxing. And I suspect that fans who enjoy this style are also fans who appreciate AND 1 type bull**** in basketball (in other words players who have handles and can break ankles, but cant put the ball in the net).

floyd wasn't like that in the lighter weight classes, and against judah he done pretty good, but i dont get why he was so cautious against feather fisted baldomir.

Exactly, But the point incase you really did miss it. Is what a respected figure in boxing believes a real boxer is.
If you have an argument with that. Take it up with Cus D'Amato.
I'm sure there are many respected trainers that prefer the cowboy slugfest style of boxing.
Anyone who prefers the style of boxing that D'Amato talked about would probably be a Floyd Mayweather fan.
And the only reason I ever defend Floyd Mayweather on this board is because I believe with all of my heart that if you had an undefeated white guy out there with that much talent, and skill. and he chose to not get hit in fights. He would be the poster boy for boxing skills rather than being reffered to as a runner.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you. Boxing is about winning the fight under the rules of boxing. Alot of people think the best way to do that by hitting and not getting hit, but if another fighter thinks the best way for him to do that is by getting your opponent to open up by letting him tee off on you, and then knocking him out cuase you hit harder, then thats also part of the sport.

In the end, hitting harder and being able to absorb punches are also athletic quialities.

it has nothing to do with colour, floyd promises action, he promises knockouts, but he doesn't produce it, if your gonna act like a **** atleast back it up.
